Surgery can be experienced as a time that throws the many dimensions of a person into a state of chaos. This article provides insight to the responses to chaos and describes ways in which to offer the quality of Presence as the essence of holistic care.
The article challenges health care institutions to take corporate responsibility in designing an environment that supports health and healing among its own employees. A program called WorkHealth, a comprehensive delivery system encompassing four integrated continuums directed toward individual employees, work teams, the organization as a whole, and the organization's relationship with the community, is described. Particular attention is focused on the health, wellness, and productivity of individuals and teams with recommendations for leaders in creating the environment for this to occur.
