Adaptive significance of amylase polymorphism in Drosophila. X. Analysis of alpha-amylase activity of two amylase variants in individual Drosophila subobscura flies.

Experiments were designed to estimate the variation of alpha-amylase activity in Drosophila subobscura individuals homozygous for AmyS and AmyF alleles at the Amy locus. The measurements of enzyme activities in six groups of male progenies determined in each individual have shown that degree of variation differs between S and F strains. Variability of amylase activity among male progenies of S strain was substantially greater, which also had significantly higher specific amylase activity than in F strain. The analysis of amylase activity variance showed that this variance among the males is 40 times, and among the females 2.7 times smaller in F than in S strain.

Adaptation, Biological

Overcompensation as a mechanism for maintaining polymorphism: egg-to-adult viability in Drosophila.

Frequency-dependent selection may be accounted for, in ecological terms, by the differential effectiveness of alternative genotypes in exploiting limiting environmental resources. Differentiation in resource exploitation among genotypes implies in turn that a mix of genotypes may exploit more fully the resources than a genetically uniform population, a phenomenon called 'overcompensation'. Experiments designed to test for overcompensation show that highly polymorphic populations can support larger numbers of individuals per food unit than less polymorphic populations. This difference cannot be attributed to the level of individual heterozygosity, which is the same in both types of populations.

Animals

[Hemolytic disease of the newborn due to anti-S-antibodies].

In the serum of S-negative secundi para woman a specific anti-S agglutinin of the IgG type was identified. The same agglutinin was identified in the serum and on the eritrocytes of the newborn with sympthomes of a light Hemolytic disease. Exchange transfusion was not necessary. The anti-S described is an immune warm agglutinin showing the efect of dose and is discovered only by the Coombs technique.
