Origin and evolutionary relationships of native Andean populations.

This paper represents an effort to explore the origin and the evolutionary relationships of native Andean populations using a multidisciplinary approach. Archeological and linguistic evidence is briefly reviewed. A genetic distance analysis among major linguistic groupings and among Andean and Amazonian native populations, together with information obtained from archaeological and linguistic sources was used to generate a migration model. It is suggested that in the late Pleistocene a group of nomadic hunters entered South America through the Isthmus of Panama and split afterwards into two groups, one moving southward into the central and south Andean areas and after crossing the Colombian, Equador and Peruvian highlands to people northwestern Argentina, the open park country of east Brazil and the Argentine Pampas. The second group migrated eastwards into Venezuela and Guyana and later southward, peopling the Brazilian Amazon. Following available waterways the Amazonian Indians expanded east and west arriving probably at the eastern slopes of the Andes some 3,500 years ago. It is hypothesized that present day Andean natives are descendants of the Amazonian groups that migrated eastwards.

[Hepatitis E virus infection in Chile: preliminary report].

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus is an enterally transmitted virus that produces an acute self limited infection. AIM: To study serum antibodies against hepatitis E virus in different patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using and ELISA technique, IgG antibodies against hepatitis E virus were measured in 40 alcoholics, 40 hemophiliacs, 174 blood donors, 36 subjects with acute non A-non B-non C hepatitis and 66 subjects with acute hepatitis A. RESULTS: Antibodies were detected in one alcoholic (2.5%), 3 hemophiliacs (7.5%), 7 blood donors (4%), 3 patients with non A-non B-non C hepatitis (8.3%) and 3 patients with acute hepatitis A (4.5%). CONCLUSIONS: A low frequency of hepatitis E infection was detected in the studied subjects.

[Early diagnosis of phenylketonuria. Follow up of 2 cases].

A screening program for the early diagnosis of phenylketonuria was initiated 24 months ago in the Servicio de Salud Metropolitano Central. Since then, 2 cases with phenylketonuria have been early diagnosed. These patients started their nutritional treatment, consisting of a phenylalanine restricted diet at 14 and 17 days of age. The children are submitted to periodic medical, anthropometric, neurologic, biochemical and psychometric analysis. With a strict control they maintain phenylalanine plasma levels between 2 and 6 mg%. Both patients have a normal psychomotor development at 4.5 and 6.5 months of age and an anthropometric development at p50 of NCHS.

[Program of neonatal screening for phenylketonuria].

A screening program for phenylketonuria in newborn infants that is being carried out at one of the Metropolitan Health Services at Santiago, Chile for the last 17 months, using the Guthrie test, is described. During this period 15,214 blood samples have been analyzed, which represented 94.4% coverage for beneficiary newborn infants. Two cases of transient hyperphenylalaninemia, one patient with benign hyperphenylalaninemia, and one infant with classical phenylketonuria have been thus identified. In this last child nutritional management was started at 13 days of life. Screening programs for early detection of phenylketonuria in Chile seem convenient, feasible and reliable.
