[New plasmid vectors for cloning and the expression of genes].

Multicopy plasmids of pMCR series have been constructed from pRRN2 (a pBR322 derivative) including plasmids carrying transcription terminators downstream the tet gene and those with opposite orientation of the tet and RNAI genes. The plasmids permit cloning and high expression of genes with strong promoters.

Synthesis of a model promoter for gene expression in Escherichia coli.

We have synthesized a 67-membered double-stranded DNA containing putative initiation sites for transcription and translation in E. coli. Among the potential applications of this DNA are construction of artificial genes, cloning of foreign genes in E. coli, and study of structure - activity relations in promoter and ribosome binding sites.

[Antitumor effect of glycopeptides from the cell wall of Lactobacillus bulgaricus].

The antitumor activity of "blastolysin", a preparation that consisted mainly of glycopeptide fragments of the cell wall of Lactobacillus bulgaricus, was studied. Blastolysin was found to exert a specific antitumor effect on sarcoma S-180, leukemia P-388, plasmacytoma MOPC-315, adenocarcinoma AKATOL, melanosarcoma B-16, carcinoma LIC, and spontaneous tumors in mice. It is of low toxicity, does not inhibit hemopoiesis, and its action on tumor tissue differs considerably from that of the known antitumor chemotherapeutic agents.
