[Age-related features of the development and course of diabetic ketoacidosis].

Analysis of the causes of development, clinical features of and treatment strategy in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in 457 diabetics of various age groups (16-39, 40-60, over 60) has revealed a more grave course of this condition in old patients. This may be explained largely by a combination of diabetes mellitus with coronary disease or brain ischemia, that impede timely detection of DKA, this resulting in delayed hospitalization and deterioration of the vital prognosis.

[Acupuncture in the treatment of diabetic angiopathy of the lower extremities].

A course method of acupuncture (10 sessions) using corporal points of general and segmental action and some auricular points was used for therapy of the functional stage of lower limb diabetic angiopathy in 55 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Rheovasography, thermography and ultrasound dopplerography were carried out over time to confirm the diagnosis of insulin dependent DM and to assess therapeutic efficacy. A direct noticeable clinical effect was obtained in 78.2% of cases, determined perhaps by improved elastotonic properties of arteries of average caliber, enhanced blood outflow and regulation of lower limb vascular peripheral resistance.

[The mechanisms of a decreased tolerance for graduated physical loading in young patients suffering from diabetes mellitus].

A study of graded exercise tolerance (GET), indices of central hemodynamics and energy metabolism in 136 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and 35 controls aged 16 to 40 has shown reduced GET in 86% of the patients. It was combined with a decrease in the CVS functional potentialities and disorder of energy formation. The lowest level of GET was noted in patients with a severe type of diabetes mellitus in marked decompensation, with disease of 10 yrs. of duration at advanced stages of diabetic microangiopathies. The use of inosine and AMP is accompanied by a rise of GET and the activity of energy producing systems.

[Characteristics of the lipid composition of erythrocyte membranes in patients with diabetes mellitus].

A total of 50 patients aged 17 to 39 with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (DM) were investigated. The following changes in the level and composition of erythrocytic membrane and plasma lipids were detected: an increase in the level of erythrocytes (ER) of total lipids (TL), disorder of the composition of neutral lipids (an increase in the level of total cholesterol--TC and a decrease in the amount of free fatty acids), and a decrease in the level of total phospholipids (PL). The amount of plasma TL, TC and PL was increased. These changes were most noticeable at the stage of carbohydrate metabolic decompensation with disease duration of 5 yrs and were accompanied by a rise of the TC/PL index. According to the literature data the above changes in the erythrocytic membrane lipid composition lead to an increase in ER microviscosity and a decrease in ER deformability, being one of the mechanisms of the development of microangiopathies in DM.
