The impact of endometrial preparation on implantation following cryopreserved-thawed-embryo transfer.

The efficacy of three protocols of endometrial preparation (spontaneous cycles, A: artificial preparation, B; ovarian stimulation, C) for cryopreserved-thawed human embryo transfer (CT-ET). The implantation and clinical pregnancy rates per cycle in 236 women undergoing 381 consecutive CT-ETs were evaluated according to the endometrial preparation protocol. No statistically significant difference was found in implantation rates per embryo transfer (A = 5.6%, B = 5.6%, C = 4.6%) and clinical pregnancy rates per cycle (A = 16.9%, B = 16.5%, C = 15.6%) between the three endometrial preparation protocols used. In conclusion, the specific method of endometrial preparation for CT-ET had no significant impact upon the implantation rate.

[Treatment of patients with ear diseases in Bern in the first half of the 19th century].

Ear patients were treated in Berne for the first time in 1841 at the Eye Policlinic. Professor Wilhelm Rau (1804-1861), ophthalmologist, was the founder of the first Ear Infirmary on the European continent. A diary dated from 1845 to 1863 contains information about the patients, their diagnoses and therapies. Chronic inflammations of the Eustachian tube and the middle ear were the most frequent diseases. Catheterisation of the Eustachian tube was an important tool in diagnosis and therapy.

Poor clinical outcome of patients developing malignant solid tumors after bone marrow transplantation for severe aplastic anemia.

From January 1974 to September 1991, 245 consecutive patients with severe aplastic anemia underwent bone marrow transplantation at the Hôpital Saint-Louis, Paris, France. Five cases of solid tumor were observed overall, a number that leads to an 8-year cumulative incidence rate of 7.7% (95% CL: 0.9%, 14.5%). Relative to the general population, the risk was equal to 22 (95% CL: 7, 51; p < 0.001). The present report focuses on the unusual clinical course of patients developing malignant tumors after bone marrow transplantation for severe aplastic anemia. It also aims at reporting the difficulty encountered in comparing data from different sources.

[Surgical and radiotherapeutic possibilities of treatment of mouth neoplasms].

The basic concept of the treatment of cancer of the oral cavity has not essentially changed in the past few decades. The final results depend mainly on the site and extent of the primary tumor and on the presence of metastases to the regional lymph nodes. In most cases the treatment still includes surgery in combination with radiotherapy, both of which must be coordinated. Complete treatment of the primary tumor and of the lymph node areas is of great importance even in non-advanced cases. Extensive resection of the tumor offers another mode of curative therapy, especially in combination with reconstructive surgery. Chemotherapy appears to be useful in this group of tumors, but only if aggressive cytoxic agents are given. However, it cannot replace the modalities of treatment mentioned above. Patients with speech and mastication disability after therapy usually need special care. Periodic controls are necessary for even longer than five years, to ensure detection of possible recurrences and second tumors.

[The management of mandibular fractures by internal fixation (author's transl)].

The results of treating mandibular fractures with rigid internal fixation are discussed. This method was used in 55 patients through the application of dynamic compression plates. The technique was then assessed critically and the followup treatment evaluated. Indications and contraindications for the procedure are discussed, as are possible errors or complications. In addition, selected cases illustrating the advantages of the procedure for reconstruction and functional rehabilitation of mandibular defects following ablative surgery or trauma are described.
