Measurement of systolic time intervals through non-invasive polygraphic techniques in healthy subjects and in patients with ischaemic heart disease. Comparison of results obtained by conventional and computer assisted means.

Computer processing of carotidograms is an incontestable methodical asset. Electronic detection of systolic time intervals excludes human errors, makes possible evaluation of a greater number of systoles, and reduces the effect of nonlinearities of recording. The proposed computerized system saves tedious manual calculations and can yield results with mutual correlations within a short period of time.

Prevention of ventricular fibrillation in experimental myocardial infarction.

The fall in the ventricular fibrillation threshold during the first half an hour following ligation of the descending branch of the left coronary artery in dog was not influenced by the i.v. injection of trimecain (Mesokain Spofa). On the other hand, an i.v. injection of methypranol (Trimepranol Spofa) given prior to ligation increased the level of ventricular fibrillation threshold 3 to 4 times compared to control value before occlusion in all 10 studied dogs. Depression of the beta-blocking adrenergic activity may thus prevent the occurrence of ventricular fibrillation in acute myocardial ischaemia.

Small surface electrodes for cardiac pacing and their effect on the longevity of pacemakers.

Two new electrode types were developed and were tested experimentally and clinically as to their long-term cardiac pacing performance. The first electrode, of a 12 sq.mm sitmulation surface, displays a tip of flat cylindrical shape. It shows an average threshold current of approx. 0.5 mA with an impulse width of 1ms. The second electrode of 8 sq.mm stimulation surface, is provided with a ballshape tip. An average threshold stimulation current of approx. 0.24 mA is hereby reached. In addition to being suitable for other applications, both electrode types may be conveniently used as implants with pacers delivering shorter stimulation impulse (0.5 to 0.8 ms) and having lower stimulation voltage (5V).
