Variation of cephalometric parameters in peri-puberty cephalometric aspects of sexual dymorphism.

The data regarding the global and segmental growth and development of the child are useful in pluri-disciplinary studies which view the human body as an entity where the biological aspects (both the normal and the pathological ones) interlace with the socio-cultural ones, thus offering the possibility to any specialist in the field of humanities and morphological studies to cover a wide range in contemporary anthropological research. The development of the skull takes place in two active stages separated by a stage of relative quiet during the age of seven and puberty when the skull has a dolicocephalic aspect. During the second stage of active growth (which starts with puberty) there is a transversal growth of the basis of the cranium followed by an anteroposterior growth. The degree of gender-related differences as far as the dimensions and proportions of the skull are concerned vary greatly according to race, therefore we may say that general ethnic differences are more pronounced than gender-related ones.

[Transient global amnesia (a study of 30 cases)].

The authors have studied 30 patients with transient global amnesia aged between 49 and 76 years (median age of 63 years), without focal neurologic signs that have been followed for periods varying between 6 months and 10 years. Three of the patients had recurrent attacks of transient global amnesia, and another three had a stroke, although at some distance from the amnesia attack. Association was noted with certain risk factors including high blood pressure, and angiopathic changes of the eye fundus (in 50% of the patients), dyslipidemia (in 30%), diabetes (in 10%), and essential polyglobulia (in 7%). Coagulation studies including thrombelastograms were carried out in 22 patients, and demonstrated hypercoagulability in 50% of them. Changes in the arterial wall were noted in 85% of the 14 patients in whom carotid sphygmograms were recorded. The presence of these risk factors could explain the occurrence of cerebrovascular accidents in patients with transient global amnesia. Electroencephalograms performed immediately or a short time after the amnesia attack have evidenced in 18 patients rapid-type dysrhythmia, or diffuse theta waves, predominantly located in the deep layers of the left and right temporal areas. The EEG tracings were either flat or normal in the remaining 12 patients. Of the 30 patients presenting with global transient amnesia only two had migraine in antecedents, and another six had headache during the evolution of amnesia. The neurologic examination did not reveal any abnormality in 27 of the patients. Sequelar signs of neurological deficits were noted in the remaining three patients.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[The action of a Chamenerion angustifolium extract in experimental influenza virus infection in mice].

V-2 and V-8, two preparations containing an extract from Chamenerion angustifolium, were tested in vitro and in vivo, for their anti-influenza properties. In vitro, the two preparations induced a significant reduction of the hemagglutinating titers. In vivo, administration of each of the two products, three times before the influenza virus inoculation significantly reduced (27%) the mortality rate and the hemagglutinating titers, and increased the survival mean time (SMT) (about 3.5 times). These effects were more striking when control infection was done seven days after the last administration of the extract: the mortality rate reduces by 50%, the HA titers lowered to zero and the SMT increased by about 5 times.
