Serum 25-OHD, vitamin A and vitamin E concentrations in healthy Finnish and Floridian women.

The concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD), vitamin A and vitamin E were measured in serum samples of Finnish and Floridian women; the samples were collected in spring. The Floridians had twice as much 25-OHD in serum as the Finns, but the levels of the two other fat-soluble vitamins were equal. Thus, in Florida there is very little risk for vitamin D deficiency, and vitamin A and E status seems to be unaffected by differences in dietary habits.

Exercise, nutrition, and the coagulation effects of estrogen replacement on cardiovascular health.

Estrogen therapy has been used safely by millions of women. Yet, there will be a small minority of women in whom a venous or arterial thrombus will develop. Given the other benefits of estrogen replacement therapy, this risk is extremely small and can be reduced to a minuscule level by encouraging postmenopausal women to eat judiciously and well and to engage in a regular and meaningful exercise program.

Spine and femur density using dual-photon absorptiometry in US white women.

Bone mineral density (BMD) of the spine (n = 892) and femur (n = 634) was measured using dual-photon absorptiometry in normal white women from seven diverse locations. The same model commercial scanner with a 153Gd source was used in all locations (SD = 1.3% among locations). There was not an age-associated decrease of spinal BMD during young adulthood (20-40 years); the correlation of age and femoral BMD in this period was low but significant (r = -0.21). There was a narrow range of intra-population variation at all ages (10-12%). The cross-sectional data showed an average diminution of about 20% in the spine and 25% in the femur between 40 and 70 years of age, followed by a continued but slower, decrease of density in older women. Adjustment of values for height and weight was called for mainly at extremes of body size.

Aging

Effect of diazepam on serum testosterone and the ventral prostate gland in male rats.

A study was initiated to investigate the effect of diazepam on serum testosterone and testosterone-sensitive tissues in male rats. Diazepam was administered in a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight daily for 10 days. When compared with an equally matched group of control male rats, this dose of diazepam was associated with a significant reduction in both the weight of the ventral prostrate of treated rats and the serum testosterone levels. These changes were not associated with alterations in serum LH and FSH and the hypothalamic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone content. Since diazepam does not interfere with the radioimmunoassay of testosterone, it is suggested that the above observations were biologically induced via direct suppression of the interstitial cells of the testis.

Painless abruptio placentae.

Three cases of abruption of a posteriorly inserted fundal placenta are described. This condition is characterized by vaginal bleeding associated with backache, a nontender uterus, and if unrecognized, high fetal mortality. Ultrasonography permits early recognition and definitive diagnosis. Fetal survival is ensured by closely supervised monitoring and early recourse to cesarean section.

Abruptio Placentae

The single-unit delivery system--a safe alternative to home deliveries.

The need has arisen for the development of a health care/delivery system that can allow for a natural and personalized childbirth experience, within the safe confines of a modern obstetric unit. The single-unit delivery system (SUDS) is designed to achieve this objective by: strict prenatal screening of patients into low- and high-risk categories, utilization of a single room for the entire labor process, and close personalized supervision of women in "normal" labor by trained midwives/monitrixes. Physicians supervise the entire unit and are directly responsible for the management of all high-risk and complicated labors. The SUDS concept has been tried in clinical practice and has been proved to be an effective method of providing safe and satisfying obstetric care without compromising modern obstetric standards.

Distribution of cytoplasmic estrogen and progesterone receptors in human endometrium.

Unoccupied estrogen receptors and progesterone receptors were measured in the cytoplasm of five sections along the length of endometrium obtained from noncancerous, premenopausal hysterectomy specimens. The concentrations of the two receptors were measured with tritiated estradiol or R5020 (a synthetic progestin), the latter two having been purified by high-pressure liquid chromatography, and were found to be highest in the fundus and lowest in the cervix. Progesterone receptor levels, ranging from 50 to 3,500 fmoles of R5020 bound per milligram of protein, were generally much higher in each section of the endometrium than estrogen receptor levels, which ranged from 0 to 500 fmoles of estradiol bound per milligram of protein. Near ovulation it seemed that the distribution profiles of both receptors became very steep, with more than a tenfold difference in the receptor levels being found between the fundus and the cervix. Receptor levels measured in endometrial samples obtained by curettage or aspiration should be interpreted with caution.
