[The lateralization effect of oxytocin on the functional activity of paired visceral organs in rats].

Following unilateral intranasal oxytocin administration, asymmetric alterations in some functional parameters of the adrenal glands, testis, lungs and heart, occurred. The lateralization of alterations was dependent on the side of oxytocin injection and the side of paired organ arrevgenent. Possible pathways of intranasal oxytocin administration effects on visceral organs as well as causes of their asymmetry, are discussed.

Administration, Intranasal↗

[The effect of the intraventricular administration of oxytocin on the functional activity of the epiphysis, adrenals and gonads and on the behavior of rats].

Intraventricular administration of oxytocin (OT) facilitated horizontal locomotion and inhibited their decrease in rats. OT also increased the number of face grooming responses but did not affect the genital grooming. The OT seems to suppress the pineal gland activity, whereas the plasma concentration of testosterone did not change and the corticosterone concentration increased. The OT seems to exert a complex effect on the nervous and endocrine systems.

Adrenal Glands↗

[The metasympathetic mechanisms supporting the constancy and stability of the internal environment in vertebrates].

The data were obtained with the aid of extracellular recording of unit activity in the cardial, enteral and respiratory parts of the metasympathetic nervous system, staining of the neural tissue preparations of atrial walls, intestine and lower part of the guinea pig trachea. The neurons were shown to be very sensitive to the main homeostatic contants: pH of the perfusion solution, its temperature and the grade of oxygenation. These structures were shown to take a direct part in maintenance of the constancy and stability of the organism inner milieu. Sympathetic nervous system differs from the above system in that the former is the system of transmission, defence, mobilisation of resources which is necessary for active interaction of the organism with ambient milieu.

[The functional asymmetry of the olfactory control of visceral functions].

In amphibia (frogs) and mammals (rats, guinea pigs, cats), unilateral electrical stimulation of olfactory lobes or section of olfactory tracts resulted in considerable functional changes in respiratory and cardiovascular systems, the olfactory influences being functionally asymmetric. Possible interactions of asymmetric influences at the level of truncal visceral centers, are discussed.

[Neurochemical mechanisms of regulation in cataleptiform states in animals].

Influence of serotonin- and GABA-ergic systems on cataleptic responses to electrical stimulation of the medial parabrachial nucleus, cuneiform nucleus, median and magnus raphe nuclei, was investigated in chronic experiments on rats. The brainstem structures seem to form a morphofunctional inhibitory system participating in catalepsy.

[Functional changes in the argentaffin cells of the stomach and electrical activity of the brain of the rat after injection of neurotensin into the hypothalamus and 3d ventricle of the brain].

Administration of neurotensin or its analogue into the hypothalamic structures altered the degree of activity synchronization among hypothalamic and brain-stem structures, the synchronization becoming most obvious among ventro-medial nucleus, amygdala and the central grey matter. Administration of the drugs into the 3rd ventricle and paraventricular nuclei suggested antagonistic effects of these peptides at the hypothalamic level. The data obtained could be regarded as local effects of the neuropeptides upon neurons of the paraventricular nucleus and as systemic effects upon argentaffin cells of the stomach antral portion.

Amygdala↗

[Effect of somatostatin on the neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus and argentaffin cells of the antral part of the rat stomach].

Administration of somatostatin induced changes of functional activity in all the central and peripheral structures under study. Neuronal activity in the paraventricular nucleus decreased by the 3rd and 15th min after somatostatin injection whereas by the 20th min the firing rate increased. Amount of argenaffin cells was sharply reduced, at that, between the 4th and 15th min which suggested an active release of enterochromaffin cell granules into the blood.

Action Potentials↗

[Characteristics of osmotic sensitivity of cells of the supraoptic nucleus of the rat hypothalamus].

The supraoptic neurons were differentiated into different types by means of antidromic stimulation of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal tract and their responses to i. v. administration of 1 M NaCl solution. I. v. administration of hypertonic NaCl solution induced the activation response in all the neurons. The neurons responding with a single spike to the tract stimulation, reacted only to administration of 1 M NaCl. The neurons responding orthodromically with a high-frequency burst as well as the neurons with no responses to the tract stimulation, revealed reactions of activation similar in time characteristics in administration of both the physiological and the hypertonic solutions. Besides, these neurons were responsive to stimulation of the ipsilateral femoral nerve as well. Possible role of these types of neurons in the functional organization of the rat hypothalamus' supraoptic nucleus, is discussed.

[Antidromal identification of hypothalamic neurosecretory cells in the rat].

Characteristics of antidromic action potentials of neurons in hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei were investigated during stimulation of hypothalamo-hypophyseal tract by stimuli of different amplitude and frequency. At tract stimulation with increased strength (1.5-2.5 times threshold) or frequency (above 100/s) discrete changes in antidromic action potential latency as well as variation of the spike fractionation in response to testing stimulus were observed. Leu-enkephaline administration into the third ventricle and intravenous injection of 1M NaCl solution reversibly changed the excitability of the antidromically activated neuron: leu-enkephaline mostly increased the latent period and the threshold of spike generation and decreased their capability to follow the stimulation frequency up to 10 Hz, whereas NaCl produced opposite effects. The data obtained indicate the necessity to take into account the excitability of the neurosecretory cell when using the accepted criteria of their antidromic identification.

[Morphofunctional interrelationships between the hippocampus and hypothalamus in rats].

Evoked reactions of the hypothalamic arcuate and medial preoptic nuclei neurons were recorded when the hippocampus was stimulated by single stimuli in anaesthetized rats. In the arcuate nucleus phasic responses and primary inhibition were found to be dominant and in the medial preoptic nucleus--both phasic and nonspecifical responses. After injection of the horseradish peroxidase into the stimulated hippocampal region stained cells were found in the nuclei of the mammillary complex, mediobasal hypothalamus and in the medial preoptic nucleus. Groups of stained neurons were observed in the periphery of ventro- and dorsomedial, lateral and mammillary nuclei of the hypothalamus. In all the studied structures, except the medial mammillary nucleus, reticular-like cells were found alongside with spindle-like and triangle neurons. The data obtained are discussed in connection with the problem of hypothalamo-hippocampal interaction.
