[Partial conservation of the splenic parenchyma in the prevention of hyposplenism after splenectomy. A note on modifications of blood platelet number from the 40th day until normalization (experimental research)].

The authors report the modifications of platelet rate in the blood in a succession of total and partial splenectomies (25%, 50%, 75%) from the 40th day after operation till normalization. The values of platelet rate got back to standard in the 50th day in the animals subjected to 25% splenectomy, and in the 60th, 70th and 80th day from operation in the rats with 50%, 75% and 100% splenectomy. The data remarked suggest the period of thrombocytosis is in direct relation with the entity of plastrinosis, whereas the modalities of decrease are similar in all groups of animals.

Myoglobinuric acute renal failure in phencyclidine overdose: report of observations in eight cases.

Eight cases of myoglobinuric acute renal failure that developed following exposure to phencyclidine were seen in the emergency department of the Martin Luther King Jr. General Hospital during a period of 36 months. All eight survived with complete recovery of renal function. Dialysis was necessary in three patients. Acute renal failure is an uncommon complication of phencyclidine abuse.

Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase. Insulin activation detected in adipose tissue by gel electrophoresis.

In rat adipose tissue, insulin (100 muU./ml.) increases the activity of cyclic AMP (but not cyclic GMP) phosphodiesterase (PDE). Radioisotopic assay, autoradiography, and histochemical stains demonstrated that cyclic nucleotide PDE activity is associated with multiple bands of protein separable by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The insulin activation of cyclic AMP PDE, however, was limited to a single band corresponding to the "low" Km enzyme specific for cyclic AMP; insulin had no effect on the "high" Km enzyme or on PDE bands with activity directed toward cyclic GMP. These data support the concept that insulin may modulate the activity of at least one of the cyclic AMP phosphodiesterases.

[Myelolipoma of the adrenal gland].

Adrenal myelolipomas are rare, nonfunctioning, benign neoplasms of the adrenal gland. The authors describe their experience of a case and they report the review of the literature. They illustrate what's etiopathogenetic theories, modern diagnostic technology "of imaging" and different surgical approaches need to be adapted to the excision of the adrenal myelolipomas.

[Endoscopic study in reflux esophagitis. Our experience].

One hundred twenty one cases of oesophagitis by gastroesophageal reflux were observed through a retrospective study of 1250 endoscopies of the upper digestive tract. The oesophagitis was staged according to Savary-Miller classification. The prevalence (93.3%) of cases were in I and II stage. The Authors found that the most frequent associated diseases with oesophagitis by gastroesophageal reflux were: hiatal hernia, gastric and duodenal peptic disorders, gastric resection according Billroth II and biliary disorders. In 86.7% of cases, endoscopic diagnosis was confirmed by histological findings. From these data and from those reported in literature the authors can ascertain that endoscopy, associated with histological findings has an important role in diagnosing oesophagitis and in monitoring medical and surgical treatment used.
