Oxidation of cyanide in aqueous solution by chemical and photochemical process.

Cyanide waste is found predominantly in industrial effluents generated from metallurgical operations. The toxicity of cyanide creates serious environmental problems. In this paper, oxidation of cyanide in aqueous solution was investigated using chemical and photochemical process. Chemical oxidation was studied at room temperature using H2O2 as oxidant and Cu2+ as catalyst. Photochemical oxidation was studied in an annular type batch photoreactor of 1l capacity using 25 W low-pressure (81.7% transmission at 254 nm wavelength) ultraviolet (UV) lamp along with H2O2 as oxidant. The effect of Cu2+ catalysis was also studied. It was observed that in absence of UV source, the degradation of cyanide by H2O2 alone was very slow, whereas copper ions accelerated the rate of reaction thereby acting as catalyst. Copper formed a complex with cyanide ion, i.e. tetracyanocuprate which had greater affinity for H2O2. Cyanate hydrolysis was also favoured by copper ions. As Cu2+ ion concentration was increased, rate of degradation also increased. Photochemical oxidation by H2O2 and Cu2+ was found to be the best system for cyanide degradation. CN- (100 mg/l) was degraded to non-detectable level in 9 min at pH 10.0 with optimum H2O2 dose of 35.5 mM and Cu2+ dose of 19 mg/l. Reaction kinetics of cyanide oxidation was found to be pseudo-first order and the rate constant has been determined for different processes.

Studies on photo-degradation of 2,4-dinitro toluene in aqueous phase.

The efficiency of different photo-degradation processes was evaluated for degrading 2,4-dinitro toluene (DNT) in aqueous phase. The rate and extent of DNT degradation and removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) contents were compared for direct photolytic and photo-oxidative reactions using various concentrations of H2O2 and Fenton's reagent with a 125 W medium pressure UV lamp. DNT was degraded rapidly under photo-oxidative conditions. Complete destruction was obtained using Fenton's reagent, wherein 100 ppm of DNT was degraded within 60 min of irradiation time. Removal of TOC and TN contents in the photo-Fenton system was 96% and 57%, respectively, after 2 h of UV irradiation. Degradation of DNT followed first order reaction kinetics. Photo-Fenton oxidation is found to be the most suitable technique to degrade DNT in aqueous phase.

Quantification of intramuscular nerves within the female striated urogenital sphincter muscle.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the quantity and distribution of intramuscular nerves within the striated urogenital sphincter and test the hypothesis that decreased nerve density is associated with decreased striated sphincter muscle and cadaver age. METHODS: Thirteen cadaveric urethras (mean age 47 years, range 15-78 years) were selected for study. A sagittal histologic section was stained with S100 stain to identify intramuscular nerves. The number of times that a nerve was seen within the striated urogenital sphincter (nerve number) was counted. The number of axons within each nerve fascicle was also counted. Regression analysis of nerve density against muscle cell number and age was performed. RESULTS: Remarkable variation was found in the quantity of intramuscular nerves in the striated urogenital sphincter of the 13 urethras studied. The number of nerves ranged from 72 to 543, a sevenfold variation (mean 247.1 +/- standard deviation 123.2), and the range of number of axons was 431 to 3523 (2201 +/- 1152.6). The larger nerve fascicles were seen predominantly in the distal (13.1 +/- 5.7 axons per nerve) compared with the proximal part of the striated urogenital sphincter (1.2 +/- 2). Reduced nerve density throughout the striated urogenital sphincter correlated with fewer muscle cells (P =.02). Nerve density also decreased with advancing age (P =.004). CONCLUSION: Remarkable variation in the quantity of intramuscular nerves was found. Women with sparse intramuscular nerves had fewer striated muscle cells. Intramuscular nerve density declined with age.

Antistress activity of P-GABA in experimental animals.

A new gamma-aminobutyric acid derivative N-phthloyl GABA (P-GABA) was found to possess anticonvulsant, antiepileptic, antiulcer and antinociceptive activities. Effect of cold restrain stress (CRS) and its modulation by P-GABA were evaluated on some biochemical and biophysical parameters in rats. CRS induced elevations in blood sugar level were unaffected by P-GABA treatment. CRS also caused an increase of Na+K+ ATPase activities, and decrease of lipid peroxidation in RBC membrane. CRS also induced (a) membrane protein clusterization, (b) increased membrane fluidity and (c) reduced thickness. CRS induced RBC membrane dynamics were reversed by P-GABA in a differential manner. However, these parameters in synaptosomal membrane were unaffected by P-GABA.

Primary pulmonary plasmacytoma.

BACKGROUND: A patient was diagnosed with an extramedullary plasmacytoma of the lung after complete resection of the mass at thoracotomy. Immunoperoxidase staining of the mass revealed monoclonal lambda chains. Screening for multiple myeloma identified a small amount of M-protein in the blood, but no other evidence of multiple myeloma was found. METHODS: A literature search was conducted to determine the prognosis and the best way to manage the patient. RESULTS: Nineteen cases of primary pulmonary plasmacytoma were found in the literature. The age range was 3-79 years. Most of these cases were diagnosed at thoracotomy and treated by surgical excision. Immunohistochemical evaluation of the lesion is essential for diagnosis but was done in only three cases. CONCLUSIONS: Surgery and radiation therapy seem to be equally effective forms of treatment. The role of adjuvant chemotherapy is unknown. Local recurrences are rare. Follow-up data were inadequate to determine disease-free survival, progression to multiple myeloma, and overall survival in primary pulmonary plasmacytoma. Close follow-up is needed to detect progression.

[A sterile, regulated, pulsation-dampened precision dosing system for biomedical technics].

For sterile continuous metering of small and very small flow rates delivered by peristaltic pump, a gravimetric control system which permits a high accuracy of mass flow is described. This is achieved by a digital PI controller and a digital filter with which the very accurate signal from a high precision electronic scale is filtered. In addition proposals are made for solving the problem of refilling the reservoir and for compensating the pulsations caused by the peristaltic pump.
