Study of the mechanism of prostacyclin (PgI2) action on myocardial contractility.

The experiments done on the isolated right ventricle of rat heart suspended in the bath for isolated organs with oxygenated Tyrode's solution showed the PgI2 (2.3 x 10-6 mmol) produced its positive inotropic effect indirectly by promoting both beta-adrenoreceptors and calcium entry through slow calcium channels because this effect could be blocked by propranolol (2.3 x 10-2 mmol - beta-adrenoreceptor blocker) or verapamil (4.3 x 10-3 mmol - slow calcium channel blocker).

Adrenergic beta-Agonists

A stereological investigation of rat endocrine pancreas after a long-term low-protein diet.

Stereological analysis of rat endocrine pancreas was carried out after 4 months of low-protein intake. Thirty make Wistar rats, aged 2 months at the beginning of the experiment, were divided into three groups. The control group (NP) received a standard laboratory diet. The experimental group (LP) received a low-protein diet, and the pair-fed animals also received a standard laboratory diet, as the NP rats did, but restricted to the amounts consumed by the LP group. All groups were offered drinking water ad lib. Weibel's multipurpose lattice was used to determine the volume fraction of cells and numerical density of islets in the endocrine pancreas. The results showed that the long-term low-protein diet decreased the volume fraction of B-cells and increased that of A-cells. Numerical density of islets was significantly increased, whereas the absolute number was decreased. The mean number of B-cells per islet was found to be decreased and that of D-cells increased. The mean radius of the islets was decreased, as was the mean surface area.

Ventilatory parameters in healthy nonsmoking adults of Adriatic islands (Yugoslavia).

Forced expiratory volumes and flows (forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) peak expiratory flow (PEF), maximal expiratory flow at 25% (MEF25%), 50% (MEF50%) and 75% (MEF75%) of the FVC) have been measured in 909 healthy nonsmoking men and women, ranging in age from 18-86 yrs, who live on Eastern Adriatic islands (Yugoslavia). This area is essentially free from air pollution. The results have been analysed in terms of age and height and regression equations for each sex were derived. The equations for FVC and FEV1 were reliable and those for forced expiratory flows were not. Comparisons were made with prediction equations derived for other populations, especially with those which are commonly used in daily medical practice.

[Problems of nutrition in school children in Subotica and its importance to health].

The aim of this paper was to determine the characteristics of the nutrition of primary school children in Subotica and to perceive the health hazards of such nutrition. A deficit of animal proteins, certain vitamins and minerals as well as surplus of fats was determined in the quality follow-up of additional meal in schools. In family nutrition, apart from the already known qualitative deficits, an irregular rhythm of taking meals was also evidenced, because about 24% of pupils do not have breakfast. The established irregularities of family and communal feeding can be one of the causes of appearance of the diseases due to deficient or surplus nutrition in pupils of Subotica. Because of this it is necessary to provide optimal communal feeding and to include as much pupils as possible in the aim of correcting family nutrition and the prevention of nutritive and health hazards.

Bilateral pseudarthrosis of the femur after stress fracture.

Stress fractures of the diaphysis of the femur are very rare, particularly bilateral ones. We describe here a woman patient with bilateral pseudoarthrosis of the femoral diaphysis which was the result of a stress fracture. The case is a rarity because the in question is of a dwarfism stature with great deformation of the lower extremities due to rickets. The patient has been closely examined for over 30 years. Our own explanation for the beginnings of stress fracture as well as for the pseudarthrosis development are given.

Child, Preschool

[Body height and weight of school age children in Subotica].

This paper discusses the result of the stature and body weight cross-sectional anthropometric examination of Subotica school children in the school year of 1986/87. The research specimen consisted of 13.689 students aged from 7-15 years which presents the complete population of elementary school children. The mean values of stature and body weight for the given sex and age, distributed according to standard deviation, create a basis for the working out of a growth curve of Subotica school children. The obtained data is of great practical importance, since it is applicable in everyday clinical work in school health centers.

[Reevaluation of work disability in chronic bronchitis and functional criteria at rest].

As part of an investigation to reassess disability which was performed in 579 subjects with an internist's diagnosis, disability was reassessed in 68 males with chronic bronchitis as the main diagnosis. Disability reassessment was carried out by an informal team of physicians consisting of pulmologists and members of a second degree disability board. The aim of the study was to define the differences between disability reevaluation and residual working capacity. In. chronic bronchitics, a complete functional pulmonary test was carried out including measurement of the degree of obstruction, several specific parameters, non-specific bronchial reactivity and an analysis of arterial blood gases. Disability was reassessed in accordance with the following parameters: accurate evaluation, inaccurate evaluation, residual working capacity, uncompleted treatment. The one-way Kruskal-Wallis rank analysis of non-parametric data attributed the following predictors as specific: age, PC20, FEV1, the condition of hyperreactive airways and the degree of airway obstruction. The relevance of functional criteria ar rest, particularly of FEV1, for assessing the loss of working capacity in persons with chronic obstructive bronchitis is emphasized.

Bronchitis

[Ventilatory function of the lungs in Brac stone cutters].

The study aims at assessing whether occupational exposure to Brac limestone, which contains a minute amount of silica, induces disorders of ventilatory capacity. It included 71 male workers employed in a stone saw-mill and 134 controls. The ventilatory functions VC, FEV1, FEV 1% VC, MEF25, MEF50 i MEF75 were examined, and the values analysed in respect to smoking habit. Variance analysis established a homogenous distribution of VC parameters, while others were heterogeneously distributed. This can be explained by smoking habit as assessable factor, and not by exposure to limestone dust. It is assumed that the production of Brac limestone in the stone saw-mill does not cause disorders in ventilatory function.

Ochratoxin A contamination of foodstuffs in an area with Balkan (endemic) nephropathy.

Ochratoxin A is a nephrotoxic fungal metabolite (mycotoxin) occurring in foodstuffs. The compound is causally associated with mycotoxic porcine nephropathy, a disease comparable with a human kidney disease, Balkan (endemic) nephropathy. A survey of 768 samples of foodstuffs (cereals and bread), locally produced in an area of Yugoslavia where Balkan (endemic) nephropathy is prevalent, has revealed that ochratoxin A is constantly present in parts of foodstuffs. The mean frequency of ochratoxin A contamination of cereals in the study period was 8.7 per cent, but a pronounced annual variation was encountered, with frequencies of contamination up to 43 per cent. These contamination frequencies are higher than those reported elsewhere for foodstuffs for human consumption. Thus further evidence is provided to support the hypothesis that ochratoxin A might by a disease determinant of Balkan (endemic) nephropathy.

The hypothalamo-hypophysial system in acipenseridae. VII. The functional morphology of the peptidergic neurosecretory cells in the preoptic nucleus of the sturgeon, Acipenser güldenstädti Brandt. A quantitative study.

The peptidergic neurosecretory cells (NSC) of the nucleus praeopticus (NP) of male and female sturgeons, A. güldenstädti Brandt, were studied light microscopically at different stages of their life cycle and under experimental conditions. Four main NSC types reflecting different phases of secretory cycle and life course of the cell have been tentatively distinguished. The maximum percentage of the high and moderate active NSC are found in juvenile animals in the sea (stages I and I-II of gonadal maturity, sgm), in upstream migrating fish in spring before spawning, in down-stream migrating fish 1-1.5 months after spawning, and in experimental fish kept for 8.5 hours in a 32% sodium chloride solution. The least active NSC accumulating neurosecretory material (NSM) are characteristic of juvenile fish (sgm II) in the sea, sturgeons maintained in a sodium chloride solution for 3.5 or 6 hours and fish which remained in a net, thrown to the sea, for some hours before fixation. The lowest percentage of these cells is observed in autumn migrants, in females soon after spawning (sgm VI) and in fish kept for 8.5 hours in a sodium chloride solution. Cells rich in basophilic substance and poor in NSM occur in juvenile and in down-stream migrating fish. Cells reflecting the state of exhaustion after hyperactivity and "ageing" cells are seen in adults, expecially in sgm VI fish, and in autumn migrants. Pyknomorphous NSC are constantly present in all fish; they are most numerous in sturgeons found in a net. A diagram demonstrating the life course and the secretory cycle of the NSC is presented and the role of the hypothalamo-hypophysial neurosecretory system (HHNS) under stress conditions is discussed.
