Analysis of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in fly ash from a waste incineration plant.

In this study, a method for the congener-specific analysis of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in fly ash from a waste incineration plant is described. This method involves extraction, column chromatography, and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric techniques. Representative fly ash samples are obtained from the waste incinerator. The purpose of this research is to briefly present the findings as they relate to PCDFs. Analyses indicate that PCDFs are consistently found in the municipal incinerator.

Acute leukemia in pregnancy with ovarian metastasis: a case report and review of the literature.

Acute leukemias tend to affect a younger population and are much more common in pregnant patients than chronic leukemias are. We report a case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia diagnosed during the third trimester presenting with organomegaly and thrombocytopenia. Delivery of the fetus by cesarean section was decided because of the fulminant nature of the acute leukemia within days of admission. Bone marrow biopsy revealed acute lymphocytic leukemia, French American-British L2 subtype B cell immunotype. A left ovarian mass was identified during the cesarean section which later proved to be lymphoblastic infiltration. The patient was started on induction chemotherapy consisting of vincristine, daunorubicin, prednisolone, and l-asparaginase immediately after the diagnosis. The patient died of Acinetobacter septicemia 18 days after the first admission.

The Ege Stroke Registry: a hospital-based study in the Aegean region, Izmir, Turkey. Analysis of 2,000 stroke patients.

We present the profile of risk factors, etiologic and clinical data of 2,000 consecutive patients with first-ever-in-a-lifetime stroke (cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage), admitted to the Ege University Hospital between January 1, 1991, and September 31, 1995. This hospital-based registry is the first systematic epidemiologic report on the stroke profile of Turkish people The Ege University Stroke Unit is the only tertiary medical care facility which is organized for patients with different stroke subtypes in Izmir, Turkey. A prospective hospital-based registry using systematic computer coding of data of all stroke patients has been used since January 1991. All patients were evaluated by clinical examination, CT and/or MRI, color duplex and specific cardiac investigations. They were followed up for at least 6 months. The mean age was 62.3 +/- 12 years, and 44.4% were females. Ischemic stroke was found in 77%, primary intracerebral hemorrhage in 19% and subarachnoid hemorrhage in 4%. The major risk factor of ischemic stroke was hypertension (63%), followed by hypercholesterolemia (37%), diabetes mellitus (35%), ischemic heart disease (23%), atrial fibrillation (20%) and smoking (17%). The main cause of primary intracerebral hemorrhage was hypertension (88%), and the principal localization was the thalamus (38%), followed by putamen (28%), lobar(16%), pons(6%), cerebellar(4%), primary intraventricular hemorrhage (4%) and multiple hemorrhages (2%). The over- all 30-day case-fatality rate was 19.7% and the higher mortality rate was found in patients with primary intracerebral hemorrhage (29%) than in those with ischemic stroke (17%). The Ege Stroke Registry allows to estimate the stroke-related problems in patients admitted to a stroke unit and to evaluate the risk factors, etiology and clinical manifestations of stroke in Turkey.

The effect of intraperitoneal paclitaxel administration on colonic anastomosis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The effect of intraperitoneal administration of chemotherapeutic agents on colonic anastomosis are still under investigation. In this study the effects of intraperitoneally administered paclitaxel on rat colonic anastomosis was investigated. METHODOLOGY: After colonic anastomosis, 3 mL of isotonic saline was administered intraperitoneally to rats in control group (Group 1, n = 20). The study group (Group 2, n = 20), paclitaxel 3 mg/kg diluted with isotonic saline was administered intraperitoneally after colonic anastomosis. Rats were sacrificed on 14th day and mean body weight, mean anastomosis bursting pressure and the histopathology of the anastomosis site of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: Mean body weight was approximately the same with the preoperative values at 14th day in both groups. Anastomosis bursting pressure in paclitaxel group (127 +/- 3 mm Hg) was found to be similar to control group (133 +/- 5 mm Hg) (P > 0.05). Mucosal layer formation in the anastomosis line was complete on the 14th day in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: As a result intraperitoneal paclitaxel administration was found to be safe as it did not reduce the anastomotic strength and not delay wound healing.
