Characterization of human extrahepatic biliary duct epithelial cells in culture.

In order to study human bile duct cells in vitro, cystic ducts were obtained during cholecystectomy and treated with collagenase and mechanical abrasion to isolate biliary epithelial cells. The culture medium was supplemented with 50% of a bovine bile duct conditioned medium obtained by incubating minced bovine extrahepatic bile ducts for 24 hr in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium. Cells grew in monolayer and showed contact inhibition at confluency. The epithelial origin of primary cultures was verified by their growth pattern, ultrastructure, and indirect immunofluorescence for cytokeratin. The cultures showed specific immunofluorescence for lysozyme, collagen types I, III, and IV, fibronectin, and laminin, but were negative for collagen type V and factor VIII-associated antigen. Thus, these cultures provide an experimental model for the in vitro study of biliary atresia and other bile duct diseases.

[The ear ossicle joints in the scanning electron microscopy image].

The incudo-stapedial joint has mostly been accepted as a true diarthrotic joint. In the older literature, however, the histological structure of the incudo-malleal joint has been controversial. Its character as a true joint has been stressed only by the sporadic histologic studies in the recent decades. Although SEM, with its spatial image and high magnification, is especially suitable for the investigation of joint surfaces--as orthopaedic studies have shown--this modern method has so far not been used for studying the ossicular joints. Even in high magnification, the normal ossicular joints show smooth surfaces similar to the typical big joints of the body. To maintain this high degree of differentiation of the delicate hyaline cartilage, a balanced equilibrium of strain and relief must be kept. Nature seems to attach great importance to the postulated protective role of the human ossicular joints.

[Venous end-to-end anastomosis with non-absorbable and absorbable screw flange rings].

Forty veno-venous anastomoses performed on femoral blood vessels of dogs showed good results using a new flange ring system. In 15 cases Palacos rings were used for the anastomoses. Follow-up studies during a period of 8 days to 1 1/2 years showed only one occlusion. Twenty-five anastomoses were performed with absorbable rings of vicryl. Follow-up studies of these anastomoses during a period of 10 days to 26 weeks showed two stenoses and two occlusions. Dissolution of the Vicryl rings lasts up to 26 weeks.

Electron and light microscopy examination of capsules around breast implants.

An investigation, by scanning electron microscopy of the capsules formed around silicone breast implants revealed that they consist almost entirely of connective tissue. In contrast, the capsules around the Y-prostheses (with a polyurethane foam surface) showed a foreign body reaction. We believe that excessive capsule formation around silicone implants is, among other factors, most likely due to discrete or moderate bleeding with subsequent hematoma formation. Therefore, we favor a two-stage procedure for subcutaneous mastectomy with insertion of the implant at 4 to 6 months after the excision.

Arterio-venous anastomoses in rainbow trout gill filaments: a scanning and transmission electron microscopic study.

The origin of arterio-venous anastomoses, connecting the efferent filament artery (EFA) with the central venous sinus (CVS) of gill filaments can be well discerned by scanning electron microscopy in the rainbow trout. Corresponding vessels between the afferent filament artery and the CVS could not be detected with the techniques applied. AVA-specific endothelial cells are characterized by their bulky shape and their microvillous surface. The general morphology of AVA's in Salmo gairdneri is very similar to that of AVA's in Tilapia mossambica (Vogel et al., 1974) but they are much longer in the trout. No filament whorls have been encountered in AVA endothelia of Salmo gairdneri.

[Investigation of the dalcon shield by scanning and transmission electronmicroscopy and bacteriologic studies (author's transl)].

Bacteriologic studies and ultrastructural examination (scanning and transmission electron microscopy) was performed on twenty eight Dalcon Shields and the corresponding uteri. Microbiologic organism were detected in various degree. The results were compared with clinical results especially in regard to septicaemia in patients carrying the device.
