The effect of 3-palmitoyl-(+)-catechin on Kupffer cells in guinea pig liver.

We report a morphometric study on the effect of 3-palmitoyl-(+)-catechin on phagocytic activity of latex particles by Kupffer cells in guinea pig liver. We found an increase in the density of latex particles in Kupffer cells of animals treated with 3-palmitoyl-(+)-catechin. The volume and density of Kupffer cells of treated animals increased (p less than 0.01); there was no significant difference in surface density of the plasma membrane. None of the parameters measured was altered in endothelial cells. These results show that 3-palmitoyl-(+)-catechin produces morphological and functional changes in Kupffer cells.

The effect of temperature on the ultrastructure of Histoplasma capsulatum during the mycelium-yeast transition.

The ultrastructural morphology of the early phases of mycelium-yeast transition in Histoplasma capsulatum after a temperature shift from 25 degrees C to only 34 degrees C is described. Under this condition of lower temperature oxidative phosphorylation is not completely uncoupled and maximum production of heat shock proteins (hsp) occurs. 24 h after temperature shift more than 90% of the cells still appear vital. Alterations in the organization of the mitochondrial cristae are the only ultrastructural changes observed in these cells. In contrast, 70% of the cells degenerate 24 h after a temperature shift from 25 degrees C to 37 degrees C and in the remaining cells mitochondria are rarely observed. These observations are discussed in relation to the production of hsp, the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation and the virulence of different strains of H. capsulatum.

[Circadian aspects of iron metabolism. Changes of total iron binding capacity in patients with liver cirrhosis and in apparently healthy persons].

A group of 8 patients (M) with liver cirrhosis were studied. Each subject was standardized with rest time extending from 22,00 to 05,00 and meals scheduled at 08,00-08,30, 12,00-12,30, 17,30-18,00. Then was sampled at 04,00, 08,00 12,00, 16,00, 20,00, 24,00. In each sample of serum were determined iron, T.I.B.C. and L.I.B.C. All data were analyzed by macroscopic approach (chronograms) and by mean cosinor. A significant circadian rhythm was detected in all parameters, with a statistically valid difference between normal subjects and patients with liver cirrhosis in the mesor of T.I.B.C. and L.I.B.C.

Circadian rhythms in blood, urine and gastric acid secretion of presumably healthy volunteers.

The mean conisor technique reveals statistically significant circadian rhythms for serum concentrations of iron, chloride, cortisol, PBI, the fibrinolytic activity of blood, urinary iron excretion and gastric acid secretion in studies covering a 24-h span for presumably healthy subjects. Quantification of these rhythms provides internationally comparable reference values both for the conventional clinical laboratory and for any special chronobiologic applications.

[Chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone. Follow-up and cytological study of a case].

The follow-up study of one chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone is reported; the tumor was a well differentiated grade II chondrosarcoma that relapsed after 10 months and metastasized after 6 years. Fine needle aspiration cytologic method was utilized for the diagnosis of the lung metastases. Cytologic criteria in the differential diagnosis of the chondrosarcoma are discussed. Follow-up of the extra-skeleton chondrosarcoma has to be continued for a long time independently from the grade of differentiation.
