[Thygeson's superficial punctate keratitis (author's transl)].

Ten cases of Thygeson's bilateral punctate epithelial keratitis were observed during a two year period. The diagnosis, therapy and prognosis are discussed. The common erroneous diagnosis of herpetic keratitis may lead to corneal damage as a result of too intensive therapy. Highly hydrophilic contact lenses have proven to be a valuable aternative to steroid therapy. The etiology remains obscure. Viruses were not detected with either tissue culture technique or with electron microscopy.

Observations on the passage of apoproteins from plasma lipoproteins into peripheral lymph in two men.

1. The passage of radioactive apolipoproteins into lymph draining the foot was investigated in two men, each given a single intravenous injection of low-density lipoprotein containing 131I-labelled apoprotein B and of very-low-density lipoprotein containing 125I-labelled apoprotein A and apoprotein C. 2. Protein-bound 125I and 131I appeared in the lymph of both subjects. Immunoelectrophoresis of lymph lipoproteins against anti-(high-density lipoprotein) and anti-(low-density lipoprotein) showed the presence of apo-high-density lipoprotein and apo-low-density lipoprotein with faster mobilities than plasma high-density and low-density lipoprotein respectively. Most of the protein-bound 131I in lymph was recovered in the precipitin line formed by the apoprotein B-containing lipoprotein after immunoelectrophoresis. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the lymph lipoprotein fraction showed the presence of 125I-containing bands with mobilities similar to those of the apoprotein A of high-density lipoprotein and of three of the fast-moving C apoproteins. 3. These results suggest that most, if not all, of the apoproteins of plasma lipoproteins reach the interstitial fluids and that some lipoproteins undergo modification during their passage into peripheral lymph.

Diagnosis and treatment of essential fatty acid deficiency in man.

Essential fatty acid deficiency was found on four occasions in three adult patients with malabsorption after intestinal resection. Diagnosis was primarily based on the gas chromatographic finding of the abnormal fatty acid 5, 8, 11- (omega9) eicosatrienoic acid in plasma lecithin. None of the patients had received parenteral nutrition with a fat-free source of calories but all had been on a reduced intake of dietary fat at some stage. Treatment with intravenous Intralipid rapidly reversed the abnormal plasma fatty acid pattern and also cleared the rash in the patient wih he most severe deficiency.

Fatty acid composition of plasma lipoproteins in control subjects and in patients with malabsorption.

The fatty acid composition of cholesterol (cholesteryl) ester, triglyceride, and lecithin has been investigated in whole plasma and individual lipoproteins of healthy control subjects, of patients with malabsorption, and also of patients without malabsorption. The results show a decreased proportion of the essential fatty acid linoleic acid in all three lipid classes in both groups of patients as compared with the healthy controls. This abnormality was more marked in the malabsorbers, especially those with steatorrhoea secondary to intestinal resection. Unequivocal biochemical evidence of essential fatty acid deficiency, as indicated by the appearance of 5, 8, 11 eicosatrienoic acid in plasma lecithin, was observed in two patients, both of whom had undergone major intestinal resections. The results suggest that intestinal resection predisposes to the development of essential fatty acid deficiency.
