A positive look at progressive discipline.

Health care organizations must employ individuals whose performance meets job standards in order to be successful in today's dynamic health care environment. Use of an effective progressive discipline program is one technique to accomplish this objective. This article explores reasons for using progressive discipline, explanations for why supervisors avoid taking disciplinary action, benefits of progressive discipline, the four stages of a progressive discipline procedure, and exceptions to applying progressive discipline.

Recruiting good employees in tough times.

In tough hiring times, health care employers must develop a fresh approach to their recruitment techniques and practices in order to capture a desired segment of the labor market. While some of these techniques and practices are new, many are a variation of conventional ones. Successful organizations will simultaneously use a variety of methods, thus enabling them to recruit good employees continually. A tight labor market requires that organizations become creative recruiters.

Retaining good employees in tough times.

Retention of valued employees is essential to maintaining high levels of quality service and efficiency in consideration of the tight labor supply and an increasingly competitive health care market. Health care organizations that desire to become "employers of choice" must devise strategies and innovative programs which will satisfy a spectrum of both work and personal needs. Such initiatives include tangible rewards such as competitive compensation and benefits, and, more important, valued intangibles like quality of work life programs. In a more attractive environment, employees will make a long-term commitment.

Managing the temperamental employee.

In today's fast-paced, competitive, and quality-centered health care environment, dealing effectively with a temperamental employee and the resultant impact on the organization presents particular challenges. Considerations include the requirement of timely action in order to alleviate the real problems of unprofessional behavior in the workplace. This article discusses the major issues associated with such situations, including why there often is a reluctance for management to take action, the consequences that are accentuated by inaction, prescriptions for preventing the problem, and steps to be taken in dealing effectively with the temperamental employee.

Making performance appraisals work more effectively.

Today's work environment requires improved employee performance levels in order to satisfy pressures for cost containment and efficient case management techniques. Effective use of performance appraisals can play a highly valuable role in accomplishing these requirements. Design and use of an active appraisal system is discussed in this article.
