Collaborative investigation of adult children of alcoholics with anxiety.

The literature reports an increased incidence of anxiety disorders in alcoholic families. Whether anxiety is a complication of alcoholism or a precursor to alcohol abuse is not understood. Studies suggest that there are psychological as well as genetic components in substance abuse and anxiety disorders. The purpose of this paper is to describe a collaborative effort designed to explore the complex interaction between the etiologic factors that lead to anxiety and substance abuse. This collaboration brings together the unique perspectives of both psychiatric medicine and psychiatric nursing.

Stress and impairment among nursing students.

This exploration of stress-related disorders among nursing students employed a longitudinal cohort design over a period of two academic years. High depressive symptoms were reported by 55% of the sample. A majority of students experienced an increase in burnout symptoms and an increase in frequency of alcohol use during their educational years. These behaviors were related to a lack of social support and external attribution style.

Alcohol use and depression symptoms among female nursing students.

A sample of 286 female nursing students responded to questions concerning drinking practices and symptoms of depression. After controlling for the possibly confounding effects of nursing student experiences (aspects of burnout such as depersonalization and social isolation) and the sociodemographic characteristics of the students, increased quantity of alcohol consumed per drinking occasion was found to be associated with increased symptoms of depression in the sober state.

Drinking patterns among student nurses.

The present study examined the use of alcohol among student nurses in a senior class of a college of nursing. A majority of the students indicated a stable pattern of alcohol use, and 13% reported alcohol-related problems either at school or at work.
