Antimicrobial activity of the Derris elliptica, Derris indica and Derris trifoliata extractives.

Various parts of Derris elliptica, Derris indica and Derris trifoliata on fractionation with a number of solvents (petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol and methanol) gave fractions which demonstrated a varied level of broad spectrum antibacterial activity. Good activity was exhibited by the methanol fractions of the leaves and root heart-wood, petrol, butanol and methanol fractions of the root bark of D. indica and petrol and ethyl acetate fractions of D. trifoliata. None of the plants showed antifungal activity.

Antimicrobial activity of the Maniltoa schefferi extracts.

All fractions of Maniltoa schefferi exhibited a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. Good activity was demonstrated by the petrol and dichloromethane fractions of seed pods, seeds with coat and by methanol fractions of stem heartwood, root bark, root heartwood and stem bark whose butanol fraction was equally good. None of the fractions showed any antifungal activity.

Effects of prolonged use of injectable hormonal contraceptive on serum lipid profile.

The current study was carried out to determine serum levels of total cholesterol, triacylglycerol (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in human female volunteers taking injectable hormonal contraceptives. For this purpose, 200 (two hundred) subjects with age range of 20-35 years were selected. Out of them, 140 (one hundred and forty) were experimental subjects and 60 (sixty) were control. Women without hormonal contraceptive were selected as the subjects of control group. The experimental subjects were taking injectable hormonal contraceptive, DMPA (depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate) for 3-5 years uninterruptedly. The mean serum total cholesterol and mean serum triacylglycerol levels of the DMPA users were significantly (P 0.05). The mean serum LDL-cholesterol level of the subjects of DMPA users was significantly (P<0.05) elevated in comparison to that of the control.

Antibacterial activity of Galeola foliata.

Galeola foliata leaves and stem bark were successively extracted with petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol and methanol. A broad spectrum antibacterial activity (24 bacteria and protozoan) was exhibited by both parts. A very good level of activity was demonstrated by the CH2Cl2 and EtOAc fractions. None of the fractions were active against the moulds.

Antibacterial and antifungal activities of Euroschinus papuanus.

The crude methanolic extracts of the leaves, stem bark, stem heart wood, root bark and root heart wood of Euroschinus papuanus and the fractions obtained on partitioning with petrol, dichloromethane (D), ethyl acetate (E) and butanol (B), exhibited a broad spectrum antibacterial activity. Fractionation drastically enhanced the activity. Excellent activity was demonstrated by the E fractions of stem heart wood, D of root bark, and E of root heart wood. Antifungal activity was exhibited by the B fractions of leaves, stem heartwood and root bark.

Genetic basis of heterosis and inbreeding depression in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

The genetic basis of heterosis was studied through mid-parent, standard variety and better parent for 11 quantitative traits in 17 parental lines and their 10 selected hybrids in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The characters were plant height, days to flag leaf initiation, days to first panicle initiation, days to 100% flowering, panicle length, flag leaf length, days to maturity, number of fertile spikelet/panicle, number of effective tillers/hill, grain yield/10-hill, and 1000-grain weight. In general the hybrids performed significantly better than the respective parents. Significant heterosis was observed for most of the studied characters. Among the 10 hybrids, four hybrids viz., 17Ax45R, 25Ax37R, 27Ax39R, 31Ax47R, and 35Ax47R showed highest heterosis in 10-hill grain yield/10-hill. Inbreeding depression of F2 progeny was also studied for 11 characters of 10 hybrids. Both positive and negative inbreeding depression were found in many crosses for the studied characters, but none was found significant. Selection of good parents was found to be the most important for developing high yielding hybrid rice varieties.

Effect of prolonged use of injectable hormonal contraceptives on blood pressure and body weight.

The study was undertaken to determine the effect of prolonged use of injectable hormonal contraceptive on blood pressure and body weight in young women. Two hundred volunteers were selected for the purpose. Of them, one hundred and forty were taking injectable hormonal contraceptive, DMPA for 3 to 5 years uninterruptedly. Rest forty subjects served as control using no contraceptive steroid. Blood pressure, systolic as well as diastolic, was measured by sphygmomanometer. Body weight was measured by weighing machine. It was observed that there were insignificant (P>0.05) elevations of systolic and diastolic blood pressure from DMPA use. But body weight of the experimental subjects was significantly (P <0.05) increased in comparison to that of the control.

Congenital heart disease and associated malformations in children with cleft lip and palate in Pakistan.

Children with cleft lip and palate often have other associated malformations. The reported incidence and types of associated malformations vary between different studies. There is a great paucity of literature on the subject from the region in general and none from Pakistan at all. The purpose of this study was to assess the frequency of associated malformations, particularly congenital heart disease, in children with cleft lip and palate presenting to the Aga Khan University (AKU) and Murshid Hospital (MH). From 1st October 1999 to 31st March 2002, all children with cleft lip and palate who presented to AKU and MH were prospectively enrolled in the study group. Socio-demographic characteristics and a number of other variables were documented. All children underwent a thorough clinical examination and an echocardiogram as part of the study protocol. 123 children formed the study group. Thirty-five (29%) of these children were found to have associated malformations. The most common of these was congenital heart disease, which accounted for 51% of all associated malformations. Thirty percent of cleft palate children had associated anomalies while 27% of cleft lip, with or without cleft palate, children had associated anomalies. There was a significant association between children born of a consanguineous marriage and the risk of associated malformations (p-value: 0.001). Consanguinity was present in 74% of children with associated anomalies as compared to 40% of children with no associated anomaly. Dysmorphic features and the presence of associated anomalies were also significantly associated (p-value: 0.009). Dysmorphic features were present in 46% of children with anomalies as compared to 21% of children with no associated anomaly. Fifty percent of children with associated anomalies had a low birth weight compared to 34% of children with no anomalies, but the difference was not statistically significant. The presence of consanguinity in a child with dysmorphic features should raise the suspicion of an associated anomaly. The likelihood of this being a cardiac defect is high and should be ruled out with a thorough clinical examination, supplemented with an echocardiogram in certain cases.

Antibacterial activity of Artocarpus heterophyllus.

The crude methanolic extracts of the stem and root barks, stem and root heart-wood, leaves, fruits and seeds of Artocarpus heterophyllus and their subsequent partitioning with petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and butanol gave fractions that exhibited a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. The butanol fractions of the root bark and fruits were found to be the most active. None of the fractions were active against the fungi tested.
