Arbovirus studies in Luanda, Angola. 1. Virological and serological studies during a yellow fever epidemic.

A yellow fever epidemic broke out in Luanda, Angola, in January 1971 and was halted in less than 3 months by prompt mass vaccination and intensive antimosquito measures. Nine strains of yellow fever virus were isolated from hospitalized cases, but attempts to isolate the virus from Aedes aegypti mosquitos failed. A serological survey for antibodies to arboviruses in 589 sera from unvaccinated persons showed that two arboviruses were circulating in the epidemic area: the yellow fever virus and the Chikungunya virus responsible for an outbreak of dengue-like disease that occurred shortly before the yellow fever epidemic.

Arbovirus studies in Luanda, Angola. 2. Virological and serological studies during an outbreak of dengue-like disease caused by the Chikungunya virus.

An outbreak of dengue-like disease was observed in Luanda, Angola, at the end of 1970 and beginning of 1971. Chikungunya virus was isolated from the blood of a patient with typical symptoms of dengue and from a pool of Aedes aegypti mosquitos. A survey for antibodies to arboviruses in the sera of persons living in Luanda showed that the Chikungunya virus was indeed responsible for the outbreak. The fact that this outbreak immediately preceded and continued concurrently with a yellow fever epidemic in Luanda shows that two arboviruses from different antigenic groups may circulate simultaneously in the same ecological area.

Survey for antibodies to arboviruses in the sera of children in Portuguese Guinea.

This paper describes the results of a study of antibodies to several arboviruses in representative groups of children in Portuguese Guinea. The survey was conducted in late 1964 and early 1965, in conjunction with a yellow fever vaccination programme undertaken when this disease appeared in West Africa. Sera were prepared from 1103 blood specimens collected from 10-15-year-old residents in different regions of the territory and were tested against 17 different antigens by means of the haemagglutination-inhibition test. In addition, 51 sera obtained from 20-25-year-old nonresidents were tested. The results show that group B arboviruses, particularly the yellow fever virus, were active in the region. Information on the activity of arboviruses of other groups was also obtained.

Magnetic resonance imaging in early diagnosis of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

Two male patients, aged 6 and 9 years, were suspected of having unilateral Perthes disease because of typical symptoms and clinical signs. Roentgenograms, including scintigraphy, were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed definite avascular necrosis in the affected hip. Roentgenograms subsequently also became positive for Perthes disease. These two cases document the advantages of MRI in early diagnosis of Perthes disease prior to development of typical radiologic changes.

Ergonomic approach in aging: experimental procedures to assess cognitive and balance impairments.

This brief commentary is focused on the experimental procedures employed in the evaluation of both cognitive and balance impairments of aging patients. This is an important ergonomic issue that might be used for research purposes. In fact, the corrected assessment of impairments during aging may favor the development of new integrated ergonomic strategies to ameliorate ADL together with the reduction of environmental risks.
