Event-related potentials in drug-naive schizophrenic patients.

Decreased amplitudes of late components of event-related potentials (ERPs) in schizophrenia were ascribed to either psychotic features or to neuroleptic treatment of the patients. To rule out the drug effect, ERPs to stroboscopic stimuli were recorded in drug-naive schizophrenics and control subjects during no-task and simple-task sessions. Patients had significantly lower amplitudes of the late ERP components during both sessions, thus confirming similar results with treated schizophrenics. On the other hand, drug-naive patients did not differ from controls in the task-related relative facilitation of late ERP components. These results differ from findings of minimal ERP facilitation to task in treated schizophrenics. This discrepancy is discussed in the context of the effects of neuroleptic treatment and task demands on ERPs.

Haloperidol and lithium carbonate treatment did not influence serum immunoglobulin levels in schizophrenic and affective patients.

Serum immunoglobulin levels were studied in 153 psychiatric patients (87 schizophrenic, 48 bipolar and 18 unipolar patients), and 35 healthy controls. Psychotropic treatments (haloperidol in the schizophrenic patients and lithium in the bipolar affective patients) did not alter serum immunoglobulin levels. Decreased mean IgM serum level was detected in the major affective patients (unipolar and bipolar) compared with normal controls. Nonspecific environmental, infectious, autoimmune and emotional factors that can play a role in the alterations obtained in psychiatric patients are discussed.

Cold agglutinin autoantibodies in psychiatric patients: their relation to diagnosis and pharmacological treatment.

BACKGROUND AND METHOD: The purpose of this study was to compare titers of cold agglutinins in schizophrenic patients with those in patients with major affective disorders and in normal healthy subjects. One hundred sixty-six psychiatric patients and 37 healthy comparison subjects were included in the study. Ninety of the patients suffered from schizophrenia, 54 from bipolar disorder, and 22 from major depression. Venous blood samples were obtained from all subjects between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. and were immediately tested for cold agglutinin titers. RESULTS: A high frequency (42.2%) of positive cold agglutinin titers was detected in the schizophrenic patients, compared with the bipolar (11.1%) and unipolar (9.0%) patients and the comparison group (8.1%). The investigators did not find any pharmacological effect on these results. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that, at least in this group, positive cold agglutinin titers are associated with schizophrenia. However, this observation cannot provide direct evidence for the involvement of viral or autoimmune factors in schizophrenia.

Prevalence on known diabetes mellitus among nationals in Abu Dahabi City.

This study aims at finding the prevalence of known diabetes mellitus among national in Abu Dahabi City by reviewing valid health record in New Rhoda Health Centre (n = 15175). This research was carried out from 16 September 1989 and lasted for 2 months. The prevalence of diabetes was more among females (2.58% and 1.81% respectively). The age specific prevalence of diabetes for both sexes was steadily increasing until age 59, then it was fluctuating. The highest rate was found from 80-84 years among males. On the other hand, among females a very high rate was met in age group 65-69 years (32.7%). International comparison of prevalence of diabetes yielded a high rate in Abu Dahabi, age adjusted prevalence rate was 5.69%.

Injuries in attempted suicide by jumping from a height.

This study was undertaken to investigate the pattern of injuries and the management of 28 patients who attempted suicide by jumping from a height. Most of the patients had serious psychiatric disorders. All but two of the patients sustained multiple injuries. The most common injury patterns were fractures of the spine and lower extremities. It was concluded that, in addition to urgent orthopaedic and surgical care, early psychiatric assessment and therapy with transfer to a psychiatric department as soon as possible facilitates the recovery and rehabilitation of these patients.

Cold agglutinin titers in psychiatric patients.

Cold agglutinin titers were obtained from the serum of 41 psychiatric patients. The 21 chronic schizophrenic patients tended to have positive cold agglutinin titers; the authors suggest that this immunological finding may be associated with long-term neuroleptic treatment.

Trisomy 8 mosaicism syndrome. Two cases demonstrating variability in phenotype.

The paper presents clinical manifestations and results of cytogenetic examination of two patients with trisomy 8 mosaicism syndrome. The findings confirm the extreme phenotype variability of this syndrome. Both the first patient, a mentally retarded child with multiple dysmorphic changes, and the second, a 31-year-old woman with normal IQ and hypogammaglobulinemia as a predominant sign, revealed osteoarticular anomalies. Dermatoglyphic studies in both patients were typical for trisomy 8, and correlated with deep skin furrows. The chromosomal analysis was based on two types of lymphocyte cultures: 3-day and 2-day. A decreased percentage of trisomic cells in 3-day cultures in comparison to 2-day cultures may suggest the influence of environmental factors on spontaneous elimination of trisomic cells in vitro.

Choreoathetosis as toxic effect of lithium treatment.

Two cases of lithium neurotoxic effects are reported. Both cases are expressed by choreoathetotic movements and in both of them intoxication was caused by combined drug therapy. In our opinion caution is advised when lithium is administered in combination with drugs, especially in elderly patients.

Copper IUD's and unwanted infertility: pathophysiology of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and sexually transmitted disease (STD).

The Multiload intrauterine device (IUD) and other copper IUDs cause various pathological alterations: thinning of superficial epithelial cells, superficial ulcerations and lesions, disturbances of cyclic development, pseudodecidual stroma, edema of the stroma, broadening of the capillaries, and lesions of the capillaries. The infiltration of numerous polymorphonuclear leukocytes, mononuclear cells, and macrophages in the endometrium and uterine lumen, causes the release of some embryotoxic material. There responses are associated with various pathophysiological alterations such as increased vascularity and membrane permeability of the small capillaries, and the production/release of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins in the endometrium.

Urinary 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) excretion in depression.

Twelve acute depressed patients were studied in the course of antidepressant treatment. Three-day-24-hour urine samples for 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylglycol (MHPG) were collected both before and after a five week treatment schedule. MHPG were estimated by spectrophotometry. Initial MHPG excretion did not reflect the severity of pretreatment depression and final MHPG showed no specific correlation with post-treatment improvement. No specific or uniform influence of different anti-depressant treatments or changes in MHPG was evident. Depressed patients with bipolar affective disorder tend to have initially lower MHPG levels than patients with unipolar depression. Urinary MHPG excretion measurements may prove not to be a useful index in the diagnosis and choice of treatment in patients suffering from primary depression.
