[Central relationship patterns in comparison with different objects].

In the present study the Relationship Episode Paradigm Interviews of 70 female patients with different psychoneurotic diseases were analysed with respect to object-specific patterns with the CCRT method. The most frequent categories are the same in all relationship episodes and in subsamples of relationship episodes with mother and father. These categories are also predominant in episodes with women and men. Relationship episodes with mother do not differ from episodes with father, and relationship episodes with women are not different from episodes with men. But there are substantial differences in relationship episodes with the mother and women and between episodes with the father and men. Patients recount much more positive relationship patterns with women and men than with their parents. This could be understood as a hint of interpersonal resources.

Specific antibody activity against neuroendocrine tissue in a case of POEMS syndrome with IgG gammopathy.

Specific antibody binding activity directed against pituitary tissue was demonstrated in a typical case of POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M protein, and skin changes) syndrome with paraproteinemia of IgG lambda type. IgG binding against various other tissues could not be detected by immunoelectroblotting and immunocytochemistry. We propose that POEMS syndrome is an antibody-mediated immune disorder, in which the hypophysis is the primary target of the pathologic myeloma antibodies. The immunopathogenetic lesion of the hypophysis could induce secondary disturbances of other organs, thus explaining the multisystemic disorder.

[Polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy and skin changes in a case of solitary myeloma].

The case is reported of a 32-year-old woman with polyneuropathy, organomegaly, edema, endocrinopathy, dark skin and solitary myeloma with monoclonal gammopathy of IgG/lambda type. More than 100 cases of this rare disorder have been observed up to now, mainly in Japan. In recent reviews the terms POEMS-syndrome or Crow-Fukase-syndrome have been used. Local radiotherapy of the myeloma led to lasting regression of symptoms. Studies with immunocytochemistry and immunoelectroblotting revealed specific antibody activity against hypophysis, suggesting that the pathologic monoclonal myeloma antibodies may damage the neuroendocrinic centers in hypothalamus and hypophysis as the primary target. Most of the multisystemic symptoms would thus be explained as secondary alterations.

High- and low-affinity binding of [3H]acetylcholine at nicotinic cholinergic receptors in rat brain.

There is both high-affinity and low-affinity nicotinic cholinergic binding of [3H]acetylcholine [( 3H]ACh) in rat brain membrane preparations. As determined by a filtration binding assay, [3H]ACh bound with Kd = 36.0 +/- 8.4 nM and Bmax = 19.4 +/- 4.5 fmol/mg protein or 3.3 +/- 0.7 fmol/mg tissue for high-affinity binding and Kd about 10(-7) to 10(-6) M and Bmax about 6-10 fmol/mg tissue or 40-60 fmol/mg protein for low-affinity binding. d-Tubocurarine (1 mM) inhibits high- as well as low-affinity binding, whereas 10 microM alpha-bungarotoxin does not compete at both binding sites. Substance P had no effect on the binding parameters of high-affinity nicotinic cholinergic binding.
