The structure of pyrazoles in the solid state: a combined CPMAS, NMR, and crystallographic study.

The structures of six N-unsubstituted pyrazoles, three already known and three newly synthesized, have been studied by a combination of X-ray crystallography, multinuclear NMR (solution and solid state), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In those cases where crystal structure and CPMAS NMR were available, the agreement was almost perfect, allowing a prediction of the tautomer (with certitude) and the tetrameric structure (with high probability) in the case of 5-isopropyl-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazole without knowing the X-ray structure. In the case of the 5-(2-benzylphenyl)-3-trifluoromethyl-1H-pyrazole above represented, the DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G level justify the great stability of this tautomer by the presence of an intramolecular N-H...pi interaction, present in solution.

Proline-catalyzed diastereoselective direct aldol reaction between 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes and ketones.

The reaction of enantiopure 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes with unmodified ketones was catalyzed by L-proline as well as by D-proline, to give the corresponding gamma-amino-beta-hydroxy ketones with good yields and diastereoselectivities. The obtained results implied that (2R,3R)-4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes and L-proline are a matched pair for diastereoselective induction.

Equatorially connected diruthenium(II,III) units toward paramagnetic supramolecular structures with singular magnetic properties.

The reaction of Ru2Cl(O2CMe)(DPhF)3 (DPhF = N,N'-diphenylformamidinate) with mono- and polycarboxylic acids gives a clean substitution of the acetate ligand, leading to the formation of complexes Ru2Cl(O2CC6H5)(DPhF)3 (1), Ru2Cl(O2CC6H4-p-CN)(DPhF)3 (2), [Ru2Cl(DPhF)3(H2O)]2(O2C)2 (3), [Ru2Cl(DPhF)3]2[C6H4-p-(CO2)2] (4), and [Ru2Cl(DPhF)3]3[C6H3-1,3,5-(CO2)3] (5). The preparation of [Ru2(NCS)(DPhF)3]3[C6H3-1,3,5-(CO2)3] (6) and {[Ru2(DPhF)3(H2O)]3[C6H3-1,3,5-(CO2)3]}(SO3CF3)3 (7) from 5 is also described. All complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, IR and electronic spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and variable-temperature magnetic measurements. The crystal structure determinations of complexes 2.0.5THF and 3.THF.4H2O (THF = tetrahydrofuran) are reported. The reactions carried out demonstrate the high chemical stability of the fragment [Ru2(DPhF)3]2+, which is preserved in all tested experimental conditions. The stability of this fragment is also corroborated by the mass spectra. Electrochemical measurements reveal in all complexes one redox process due to the equilibrium Ru2(5+) <--> Ru2(6+). In the polynuclear complex 7, some additional oxidation processes are also observed that have been ascribed to the presence of two types of dimetallic units rather than two consecutive reversible oxidations. The magnetic behavior toward temperature for complexes 1-7 from 300 to 2 K is analyzed. Complexes 1-7 show low values of antiferromagnetic coupling in accordance with the molecular nature in 1 and 2 and the absence of important antiferromagnetic interaction through the carboxylate bridging ligands in 3-7, respectively. In addition, the magnetic properties of complex 7 do not correspond to any magnetic behavior described for diruthenium(II,III) complexes. The experimental data of compound 7 are simulated considering a physical mixture of S = 1/2 and 3/2 spin states. This magnetic study demonstrates the high sensitivity of the electronic configuration of the unit [Ru2(DPhF)3]2+ to small changes in the nature of the axial ligands. Finally, the energy gap between the pi and delta orbitals in these types of compounds allows the tentative assignment of the transition pi --> delta.

Synthesis of strained tricyclic beta-lactams by intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reactions of 2-azetidinone-tethered enallenols: control of regioselectivity by selective alkene substitution.

A convenient metal-free methodology for the preparation of structurally novel, strained tricyclic beta-lactams containing a cyclobutane ring has been developed. The first examples accounting for the intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reactions in beta-lactams have been achieved by the thermolysis of 2-azetidinone-tethered enallenols, which have been prepared in aqueous media by regio- and diastereoselective indium-mediated carbonyl allenylation of 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes. Notably, the regioselectivity of the cycloaddition can be tuned in the allene component just by a subtle variation in the substitution pattern of the alkene component.

Novel hydridoirida-beta-diketones containing small molecules, CO, or ethylene: their behavior in coordinating solvents such as dimethylsulfoxide or acetonitrile.

New hydridoirida-beta-diketones [IrH[(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))2H](CO)]ClO4 2 and [IrH[(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))2H](olefin)]BF4 (olefin = C2H4, 5; 1-hexene, 10) have been prepared. These complexes may afford new diacylhydridoiridium(III) derivatives. In chloroform solution, complex 2 is in equilibrium with the deprotonated diacylhydride trans-[IrH(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))2(CO)] complex 3. In DMSO, deprotonation of 2 occurs to yield the kinetically favored product 3, which isomerizes to the thermodynamically favored complex cis-[IrH(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))2(CO)] 4. Reprotonation of 4 with HBF4 in chlorinated solvents gives the cation in 2. In coordinating solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide or acetonitrile, complex 5 undergoes displacement of ethylene to afford [IrH{(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))2H](L)]BF4 (L = DMSO, 7; CH3CN, 9). Complexes 5 and 7 undergo deprotonation by NEt3 to give the corresponding diacylhydrides. The ethylene complex gives only trans-[IrH(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))2(C2H4)] 6, while the dimethyl sulfoxide derivative affords a mixture of trans- and cis-[IrH(PPh2(o-C6H4CO))2(DMSO)] 8. Complex 10 shows inhibited alkene rotation around the Ir-olefin axis. All of the complexes were fully characterized spectroscopically. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was performed on complexes 3, 4, and 9. The 13C NMR and X-ray data point to a carbenoid character in the carbon atoms bonded to iridium in the irida--diketone fragment, so that it can be considered as an acyl(hydroxycarbene) moiety.

Discrete and monodimensional heteropolynuclear structures formed by tetracarboxylatodiruthenium(II,III) and perrhenato fragments.

Reaction between cationic units of carboxylate-bridged diruthenium complexes [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CR)(4)](+) (R = Me, CMePh(2), CMe(3), CH(2)CH(2)OMe, C(Me)=CHEt, C(6)H(4)-p-OMe, Ph) and tetrabutylammonium perrhenate gives complexes with different arrangements in the solid state. Thus, the compounds Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CR)(4)(ReO(4)) [R = Me (1), CMePh(2) (2), CMe(3) (3), CH(2)CH(2)OMe (4), C(Me)=CHEt (5), C(6)H(4)-p-OMe (6), Ph (7)] have polymeric structures with the diruthenium units linked by perrhenate ligands in the axial positions. The structures of complexes 3.THF and 4 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The tetrahedral geometry of the ReO(4)(-) anion permits the formation of a chain close to the linearity. In contrast to the polymeric chains observed in complexes 1-7, the reaction of [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)](+) with NBu(4)ReO(4) also affords the compounds Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(ReO(4))(H(2)O) (8) and NBu(4)[Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(ReO(4))(2)] (9) depending on the reaction conditions. The structure of 8 consists of cationic and anionic units, [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](+) and [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(ReO(4))(2)](-), linked by hydrogen bonds, which give a three-dimensional net. The structure of complex 9.0.5H(2)O has an anionic unit similar to that of 8, whose counterion is NBu(4)(+). The Ru-Ru bond distances are slightly longer in [Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CPh)(4)(ReO(4))(2)](-) than in the polymeric compounds Ru(2)(mu-O(2)CR)(4)(ReO(4)). The magnetic behavior owes to the existence of zero-field splitting (ZFS) and a weak antiferromagnetic coupling. The experimental data are fitted with a model that considers the ZFS effect using the Hamiltonian (D) = SDS. The weak antiferromagnetic coupling is introduced as a perturbation, using the molecular field approximation.

Novel photoreactions of 2-aza-1,4-dienes in the triplet excited state and via radical-cation intermediates. 2-aza-di-pi-methane rearrangements yielding cyclopropylimines and N-vinylaziridines.

Triplet-sensitized irradiation of 2-aza-1,4-dienes affords N-cyclopropylimines via 2-aza-di-pi-methane (2-ADPM) rearrangement pathways. In the case of the pentaphenyl-substituted azadiene 1, irradiation leads to formation of cyclopropylimine 2 as well as N-vinylaziridine 3. The transformations represent the first examples of di-pi-methane rearrangement reactions that yield three-membered heterocyclic products. SET-sensitized irradiation of 2-aza-1,4-dienes, by using 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) as an electron-acceptor sensitizer and biphenyl as cosensitizer, brings about regioselective formation of N-vinylaziridines. Under these conditions, azadiene 1 also affords cyclopropylimine 37, resulting from an aryl-di-pi-methane rearrangement. This result demonstrates that di-pi-methane reactions can also take place via radical-cation intermediates. In some instances, imine and olefin centered cation-radical intermediates, generated by SET-sensitized irradiation, undergo alternative reactions to produce isoquinoline and benzoazepine products.

Light-induced aminocarbene to imine dyotropic rearrangement in a chromium(0) center: an unprecedented reaction pathway.

1,2-Dyotropic rearrangement can be induced by irradiation of properly functionalized Fischer carbenes. This novel reaction takes place by a stepwise mechanism and with double inversion of configuration at the static scaffold. Good yields are obtained with both cyclic and acyclic structures, thus suggesting that this unprecedented transformation can be extended to other organometallic systems.

Efficient entry to highly functionalized beta-lactams by regio- and stereoselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of 2-azetidinone-tethered nitrones. Synthetic applications.

Racemic as well as optically pure 2-azetidinone-tethered nitrones, both cyclic and acyclic, were smoothly prepared from 4-oxoazetidine-2-carbaldehydes. The regio- and diastereoselectivities of the intermolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of 2-azetidinone-tethered nitrones with substituted alkenes and alkynes were investigated. 2-Azetidinone-tethered nitrones on reacting with various dipolarophiles yielded isoxazolinyl-, isoxazolidinyl-, or fused polycyclic-beta-lactams, exhibiting good regio- and facial stereoselectivity in the most of the cases. In addition, some interesting transformations of these cycloadducts were performed, yielding aziridinyl beta-lactams or functionalized beta-alkoxycarbonyl gamma-lactams (derivatives of the aza analogue of paraconic acid).
