Mode coupling behavior of a Lennard-Jones binary mixture: a comparison between bulk and confined phases.

We present a quantitative comparison at equivalent thermodynamical conditions of bulk and confined dynamical properties of a Lennard-Jones binary mixture upon supercooling. Both systems had been previously found to display a behavior in agreement with the mode coupling theory of the evolution of glassy dynamics. Differences and analogies of behavior are discussed focusing, in particular, on the role of hopping in reducing spatially correlated dynamics in the confined system with respect to the bulk.

Measurement of the D(s)+ lifetime.

A high statistics measurement of the D(s)+ lifetime from the Fermilab fixed-target FOCUS photoproduction experiment is presented. We describe the analysis of the two decay modes, D(s)+ --> phi(1020)pi+ and D(s)+ -->K*(892)0K+, used for the measurement. The measured lifetime is 507.4 +/- 5.5(stat) +/- 5.1(syst) fs using 8961 +/- 105 D(s)+ --> phi(1020)pi+ and 4680 +/- 90 D(s)+ --> K*(892)0K+ decays. This is a significant improvement over the present world average.

Inherent structures and Kauzmann temperature of confined liquids.

Calculations of the thermodynamical properties of a supercooled liquid confined in a matrix are performed with an inherent structure analysis. The liquid entropy is computed by means of a thermodynamical integration procedure. The contributions to the free energy of the liquid can be decoupled also in confinement in the configurational and the vibrational parts. We show that the vibrational entropy can be calculated in the harmonic approximation as in the bulk case. The Kauzmann temperature of the confined system is estimated from the behavior of the configurational entropy.

Computer simulation of the phase diagram for a fluid confined in a fractal and disordered porous material.

We present a grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation study of the phase diagram of a Lennard-Jones fluid adsorbed in a fractal and highly porous aerogel. The gel environment is generated from an off-lattice diffusion limited cluster-cluster aggregation process. Simulations have been performed with the multicanonical ensemble sampling technique. The biased sampling function has been obtained by histogram reweighting calculations. Comparing the confined and the bulk system liquid-vapor coexistence curves we observe a decrease of both the critical temperature and density in qualitative agreement with experiments and other Monte Carlo studies on Lennard-Jones fluids confined in random matrices of spheres. At variance with these numerical studies we do not observe upon confinement a peak on the liquid side of the coexistence curve associated with a liquid-liquid phase coexistence. In our case only a shouldering of the coexistence curve appears upon confinement. This shoulder can be associated with high density fluctuations in the liquid phase. The coexisting vapor and liquid phases in our system show a high degree of spatial disorder and inhomogeneity.

Slow dynamics of a confined supercooled binary mixture. II. Q space analysis.

We report the analysis in the wave vector space of the density correlator of a Lennard-Jones binary mixture confined in a disordered matrix of soft spheres upon supercooling. In spite of the strong confining medium the behavior of the mixture is consistent with the mode-coupling theory predictions for bulk supercooled liquids. The relaxation times extracted from the fit of the density correlator to the stretched exponential function follow a unique power law behavior as a function of wave vector and temperature. The von Schweidler scaling properties are valid for an extended wave vector range around the peak of the structure factor. The parameters extracted in the present work are compared with the bulk values obtained in literature.

Slow dynamics of a confined supercooled binary mixture: direct space analysis.

Dynamical properties of a Lennard-Jones binary mixture embedded in an off-lattice matrix of soft spheres are studied in the direct space upon supercooling by molecular dynamics simulations. On lowering the temperature, the smaller particles tend to avoid the soft sphere interfaces and correspondingly their mobility decreases below one of the larger particles. The system displays a dynamic behavior, consistent with the mode coupling predictions. A decrease in the mode coupling crossover temperature with respect to the bulk is found. We however find that the range of validity of the theory shrinks with respect to the bulk. This is due to the change in the smaller particle mobility and to a substantial enhancement of hopping processes well above the crossover temperature upon confinement.

Effects of confinement on static and dynamical properties of water.

Molecular-dynamics results on water confined in a silica pore are reviewed and discussed in connection with experiments performed on water in Vycor and with studies of water in contact with proteins. The properties of confined water are studied as a function of both temperature and hydration level. The interaction of water in the film close to the substrate with the silica atoms induces a strong distortion of the hydrogen bond network. At high hydration levels a double dynamical regime is observed. At low hydration an anomalous diffusion is found upon supercooling with a transition from a Brownian to a non-Brownian regime on approaching the substrate in agreement with results found in studies of water in contact with globular proteins.

Microscopic two-dimensional lattice model of dimer granular compaction with friction.

We study by Monte Carlo simulation the compaction dynamics of hard dimers in two dimensions under the action of gravity, subjected to vertical and horizontal shaking, considering also the case in which a friction force acts for horizontal displacements of the dimers. These forces are modeled by introducing effective probabilities for all kinds of moves of the particles. We analyze the dynamics for different values of the time tau during which the shaking is applied to the system and for different intensities of the forces. It turns out that the density evolution in time follows a stretched exponential behavior if tau is not very large, while a power law tail develops for larger values of tau. Moreover, in the absence of friction, a critical value tau(*) exists, which signals the crossover between two different regimes: for tau tau(*) it reaches logarithmically a maximal saturation value. Such behavior smears out when a finite friction force is present. In this situation the dynamics is slower and lower asymptotic densities are attained. In particular, for significant friction forces, the final density decreases linearly with the friction coefficient. We also compare the frictionless single tap dynamics to the sequential tapping dynamics, observing in the latter case an inverse logarithmic behavior of the density evolution, as found in the experiments.

A high statistics measurement of the Lambda(+)(c) lifetime.

A high statistics measurement of the Lambda(+)(c) lifetime from the Fermilab fixed-target FOCUS photoproduction experiment is presented. We describe the analysis technique with particular attention to the determination of the systematic uncertainty. The measured value of 204.6 +/- 3.4 (stat) +/- 2.5 (syst) fs from 8034 +/- 122 Lambda(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+) decays represents a significant improvement over the present world average.

Stretched exponential relaxation in a diffusive lattice model.

We studied the single dimer dynamics in a lattice diffusive model as a function of particle density in the high densification regime. The mean square displacement is found to be subdiffusive both in one and two dimensions. The spatial dependence of the self-part of the van Hove correlation function displays as a function of r a single peak and signals a dramatic slow down of the system for high density. The self-intermediate scattering function is fitted to the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts law. The exponent beta extracted from the fits is density independent while the relaxation time tau follows a scaling law with an exponent 2.5.

Search for CP violation in the decays D+--> K(S)pi+ and D+-->K(S)K+.

A high-statistics sample of photoproduced charm from the FOCUS experiment has been used to search for direct CP violation in the decay rates for D+-->K(S)pi+ and D+-->K(S)K+. We have measured the following asymmetry parameters relative to D+-->K-pi+pi+: A(CP)(K(S)pi+) = (-1.6+/-1.5+/-0.9)%, A(CP)(K(S)K+) = (+6.9+/-6.0+/-1.5)%, and A(CP)(K(S)K+) = (+7.1+/-6.1+/-1.2)% relative to D+-->K(S)pi+. We have also measured the relative branching ratios and found Gamma(D+-->K(0)pi+)/Gamma(D+-->K-pi+pi+) = (30.60+/-0.46+/-0.32)%, Gamma(D+-->K(0)K+)/Gamma(D+-->K-pi+pi+) = (6.04+/-0.35+/-0.30)%, and Gamma(D+-->K(0)K+)/Gamma(D+-->K(0)pi+) = (19.96+/-1.19+/-0.96)%.

Measurement of the branching ratios of D(+) and D(+)(s) hadronic decays to four-body final states containing a K(S).

We have studied hadronic four-body decays of D(+) and D(+)(s) mesons with a K(S) in the final state using data recorded during the 1996-1997 fixed-target run of the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment FOCUS. We report a new branching ratio measurement of gamma(D(+)-->K(S)K-pi(+)pi(+))/gamma(D(+)-->K(S)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)) = 0.0768+/-0.0041+/-0.0032. We make the first observation of three new decay modes with branching ratios gamma(D(+)-->K(S)K+pi(+)pi(-))/gamma(D(+)-->K(S)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)) = 0.0562+/-0.0039+/-0.0040, gamma(D(+)-->K(S)K+K-pi(+))/gamma(D(+)-->K(S)pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)) = 0.0077+/-0.0015+/-0.0009, and gamma(D(+)(s)-->K(S)K+pi(+)pi(-))/gamma(D(+)(s)-->K(S)K-pi(+)pi(+)) = 0.586+/-0.052+/-0.043, where in each case the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic.

Study of the decay D0 --> K+pi-.

Using a large sample of photoproduced charm mesons from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab (FNAL-E831), we observe the decay D0-->K+pi- with a signal yield of 149+/-31 events compared to a similarly cut sample consisting of 36 760+/-195 D0-->K-pi+ events. We use the observed ratio of D0-->K+pi- to D0-->K-pi+ (0.404+/-0.085+/-0.025)% to obtain a relationship between the D0 mixing and doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay parameters.

Supercooled confined water and the mode coupling crossover temperature

We present a molecular dynamics study of the single-particle dynamics of supercooled water confined in a silica pore. Two dynamical regimes are found. Close to the hydrophilic substrate molecules are below the mode coupling crossover temperature, T(C), already at ambient temperature. The water closer to the center of the pore (free water) approaches upon supercooling T(C) as predicted by mode coupling theories. For free water the crossover temperature and crossover exponent gamma are extracted from power-law fits to both the diffusion coefficient and the relaxation time of the late alpha region.

[Pordenone study: HDL-cholesterol and obesity indexes in the young].

BACKGROUND: In 1987, ten years after the first observation, we performed the follow-up of the subjects included in the "Pordenone Study on the precursors of atherosclerosis in childhood". METHODS: The anthropometric, biologic and anamnestic indicators of coronary risk were evaluated. The W.H.O. protocol was always used. 439 (90%) subjects underwent reexamination, (234 males and 205 females between 18 and 26 years). HDL cholesterol, tricipital and subscapular skinfold thickness, weight and height were evaluated. The aim of our study was to find possible correlations between obesity indexes and HDL cholesterol values. RESULTS: We found that HDL cholesterol levels are lower in males compared to females and that differences exist below and over the 80 degrees percentile of BMI. Obese subjects have lower HDL cholesterol levels in both sexes. Females with android obesity (subjects with subscapular skinfold thickness values over 80 degrees percentile) had low HDL cholesterol values. CONCLUSIONS: Because of this inverse correlation between HDL cholesterol and coronary risk, and because young obese generally have low HDL cholesterol levels, we believe that the study of coronary risk factors is also useful starting from this age in overweight subjects. This will be useful for preventive purposes. Particular attention must be given to young girls with android obesity.

[The Pordenone study on the precursors of atherosclosis in childhood. A 10-year follow-up. Cigarette smoking].

We have studied smoking habit in the sample enrolled in the ten year follow-up of the "Pordenone Study on the Precursors of Atherosclerosis in Childhood". The response rate at ten year follow-up was very high (about 90%). Prevalence of smoking is 45.1% among males and 25.6% among females. Males and females aged 23 present a prevalence of smokers higher than the other groups while the group aged 26 smoke less. Males began to smoke at 16.4 years, females at 16.7. Mean daily consumption is 12.6 cigarettes among males, and 5.0 among females. Juvenile experimentation with cigarettes and juvenile smoking habit are strong predictors to smoke ten years later; while parental smoking behaviour is not so influential. Therefore we conclude that smoking habit acquired in youngs has a high probability to be maintained in adults, remarking the importance of planning a preventive intervention as early as possible.
