Interracial dating: attitudes and experience among American college students in California.

Dating and marriage crossing ethnic, racial, and cultural lines have become increasingly common in the United States. This study examined two aspects, interracial dating behavior and attitudes toward romantic involvement, in four ethnic groups of college students: Euro-American, Latino, Asian-American, and African-American. Subjects (196 men, 367 women) were surveyed with regard to their willingness to be romantically involved interracially or interculturally along with their actual interracial dating experience. Analysis indicated a high willingness in all ethnic groups to be romantically involved as well as an absence of sex difference with regard to both attitude and experience. However, there were differences in both attitude and experience among ethnic groups.

Gender stereotypes: a bias against men.

In a class on the psychology of male roles, 38 undergraduates (18 men, 20 women) participated in an activity designed to assess gender stereotypes. A chi-square analysis revealed that participants produced significantly more negative stereotypes for men than for women. These results, consistent with crosscultural findings, are discussed in terms of methodological issues and the differential socialization of men and women.

College women who initiate assaults on their male partners and the reasons offered for such behavior.

Studies of spousal and dating violence indicate that women are as likely as men to assault their partners physically. This investigation examined the issue of the initiation of physical assaults by women on their male partners and the reasons offered for such behavior. Response from 978 female college women indicate that, within a 5-yr. period, 29% (n = 285) admitted to physical aggression against their male partners. Younger women in their 20's were significantly more likely to aggress physically than women who were 30 yr, and above. Women stated that they expressed aggression toward their male partners in part because they wished to engage their partner's attention, particularly emotionally. Also assaultive women did not believe that their male victims would be seriously injured or would retaliate.

College students' perception of men as victims of women's assaultive behavior.

Recent reviews have indicated that women assault male partners as frequently as men assault women. This study explored college students' awareness and acceptance of this finding. 371 subjects responding to a survey (91 men, 280 women) indicated that, while 138 were aware of the finding, 242 regardless of gender accepted the finding that men are frequent victims of women's assaults in intimate relationships.
