The effect of xanthine derivatives on platelet aggregation, blood coagulation and the rate of thrombus formation has been studied. Some of the compounds have proved to be effective antiaggregative agents both when added to the platelet enriched plasma and administered to the body.
The effect of some substances on the aggregation of red blood cells induced by gamma-globulin and fibrinogen was studied in vitro. Fructose 1,6-diphosphate, glucose 6-phosphate, glyceraldehyde dehydrogenase, insulin and prostaglandin E1 inhibited aggregation of red cells. Glucose, glucose 1,6-phosphate and ACTH had different effects in various concentrations on red cell aggregation, while fructose, prednisolon and D-oxy-prostaglandin E1 alpha and E1 beta caused no effect.

The effect of prostaglandin E1 in a concentration of 0.1 gamma/ml on the aggregation and disaggregation of thrombocytes and erythrocytes in vitro was studied. Prostaglandin E1 was found to materially reduce the aggregation and to produce disaggregation of thrombocytes. A somewhat diminished aggregation of erythrocytes was also noted. Prostaglandin E1 failed to cause disaggregation of erythrocytes.
