The value of umbilical artery Doppler analysis in the prediction of fetal acidosis in labour.
Doppler waveform analysis of the umbilical artery was performed on 42 patients with decelerations of the fetal heart rate during the first stage of labour. A fetal scalp blood sample was analysed or caesarean section was performed. At delivery the umbilical vein pH was estimated. A significant negative correlation between the umbilical vein pH and the pulsatility index of the Doppler waveform was found (r = -0.59). There was not a significant correlation between the pulsatility index and the scalp pH measurement. The use of Doppler waveform analysis in labour is discussed.

The effect of nifedipine on fetal umbilical artery Doppler waveforms in pregnancies complicated by hypertension.
The effect of nifedipine 5 mg administered sublingually to pregnant hypertensive patients was examined in a randomised controlled double-blind study. The effect on maternal blood pressure and the fetal umbilical artery Doppler waveform was studied for 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after administration of the drug or placebo. This dose resulted in a significant drop in maternal blood pressure 30 minutes after administration and did not result in a significant change in the Doppler umbilical artery waveform (in fetuses with normal waveforms) when compared with a control group.

Infantile fibrosarcoma presenting as shoulder dystocia. A case report.
Congenital (infantile) fibrosarcomas are soft-tissue tumours that usually present after birth. In the case described a large tumour of the right arm caused shoulder dystocia and death of the fetus.
