Delayed traumatic superior mesenteric arteriovenous fistula after a stab wound: case report.

Eight cases of superior mesenteric arteriovenous fistula (SMAVF) occurring after an abdominal stab wound have been reported. Seven of these patients manifested symptoms within 1 month after the stab wound. We report the case of a 28-year-old man whose SMAVF occurred 31 months after an abdominal stab wound. A SMAVF must be considered even when considerable time has elapsed between penetrating abdominal trauma and symptoms of abdominal pain, unexplained diarrhea, or an abdominal bruit or thrill.

Spontaneous endobronchial erosion and expectoration of a retained intrathoracic bullet: case report.

In all four previously reported cases of endobronchial erosion from retained intrathoracic foreign objects, the object eventually required surgical removal. We report the case of a patient with a bullet in the left hemithorax who developed bronchial erosion and hemoptysis 3 months after the injury, with subsequent expectoration of the bullet. Although most foreign bodies within the thorax pose no special problems, migration of the object or the development of symptoms warrants investigation and possibly subsequent surgical removal of the object.

The improbable intravesical foreign body.

Foreign objects in the urinary bladder can occasionally pose perplexing diagnostic problems, especially in the face of a seemingly incredible history. This case illustrates the importance of investigating such claims. Occasionally, alternate diagnostic methods such as fluoroscopy or ultrasonography may assist in noninvasive diagnosis and management.

Primary laryngeal and nasal septal lesions in pemphigus vulgaris.

Synchronous laryngeal and nasal septal lesions in pemphigus vulgaris are rare. The authors report a case of pemphigus vulgaris in an elderly man who was seen with lesions of the supraglottic larynx and nasal septum. The classic skin changes of pemphigus eventually developed, and the patient responded to daily treatments of 80 mg of prednisone. Steroids and immunosuppressive agents remain the treatment of choice, but a favorable prognosis is still dependent on early diagnosis and institution of therapy.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for detection of xylem-limited bacteria: use of trinder reagent.

Quantitation and detection of xylem-limited bacteria with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with a peroxidase conjugate is described. The use of the Trinder reagent (4-aminoantipyrine) allows the determination of extremely small quantities of peroxidase with no precipitate formation or inactivation of the enzyme by H(2)O(2). Comparison of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method with microscopic and histochemical tests for the presence of the phony peach disease bacterium in 9-year-old "June Gold" peach trees gave comparable results. The peroxidase conjugate with the Trinder reagent is more sensitive than the alkaline phosphatase conjugate typically used for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay quantitation.
