Expression of murine H-2Kb histocompatibility antigen in cells transformed with cloned H-2 genes.

Cosmids containing H-2 histocompatibility antigen genes of the H-2b haplotype have been isolated. One of these genes expresses a 45,000 molecular weight protein, indistinguishable from H-2Kb when introduced into mouse L cells. These H-2Kb transformed L cells can be killed by allospecific anti-H-2Kb cytotoxic T cells. Moreover, when infected with influenza virus, they can be killed by an H-2Kb-restricted, influenza virus-specific cytotoxic T cell line. These results show that expression of the H-2Kb gene product on the L-cell surface is sufficient to make it a target for specific T-cell killing.

Metastatic adnexal trophoblastic neoplasm: contribution of MR imaging.

We report a case of pathologically proven metastatic trophoblastic neoplasm involving the adnexa which occurred after dilatation and curettage and chemotherapy. Duplex doppler ultrasound demonstrated increased vascularity in the adnexa. Angiography was sensitive but did not decisively distinguish between tumor in the adnexa and arteriovenous fistula in the uterus. In addition to abnormal vascularity, magnetic resonance also showed foci of abnormal signal in the adnexa not seen in the uterus and correctly suggested the presence of tumor.

MHC class I expression on human tumour cells and their susceptibility to NK lysis.

Although natural killer (NK) activity is not restricted by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), it has been suggested that the level of expression of MHC antigens by target cells may influence their lysis by NK cells. We have studied the NK susceptibility of 20 cell lines obtained from primitive and metastatic human tumours and the K562 cell line treated with gamma-interferon, phorbol ester TPA and tumour factor NK-RIF. When the levels of MHC class I antigen expression on the human tumour cell lines and their NK susceptibility were compared, no relationship between these two parameters was observed. Furthermore the treatment of K562 with either gamma-interferon, TPA or NK-RIF decreased its NK susceptibility independently of MHC class I expression. These results indicate that the MHC class I antigen is not the only factor directly involved in NK susceptibility and suggest that other membrane structures modulated by gamma-interferon, TPA or NK-RIF may also influence NK susceptibility.

[Detection of meningococcal meningitis epidemics in Africa: a new recommendation].

In sub-Saharan Africa, the control of meningococcal meningitis epidemics relies on early epidemic detection and mass vaccination. However, experience shows that interventions are often initiated too late to have a significant impact on the epidemic. A new recommendation drafted by participants of a consensus meeting proposes an alert threshold and an epidemic threshold based on the weekly number or incidence of meningitis cases, according to the population size and the epidemic risk, resulting in indicators with high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of an emerging epidemic. Meningitis outbreak investigations must include an assessment of the quality of epidemiologic surveillance. The new recommendation is published in English and French in the Weekly Epidemiologic Record [12]. The success of this consensus meeting shows the value of integrating results from surveillance, field experience and operational research for designing new health strategies.

[Erosive lichen planus with oral and plantar involvement].

We present herein a case of an unusual variant of lichen planus characterized by chronic and painful ulcerations of the feet, erosive oral lesions and nail alterations. We emphasized the importance of the oral lesions in the correct diagnostic of these patients.

[Early daunorubicin cardiotoxicity and fatal outcome in a child with acute myeloblastic leukemia (M2)].

The authors report a case of fatal Daunorubicin cardiotoxicity on initial phase of therapy for Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia at cumulative doses (225 mg/mq) considered still safe from the current literature. Despite the interruption of therapy and the interventions performed in support of cardiac functionality the patient came to exitus for heart failure 24 hours after the symptoms onset. This example represents a further confirmation of the utility of a steady monitoring with specific tests for the patients undergoing Daunorubicin therapy.
