[Sleep disturbances. Toward a new classification (author's transl)].

Various epidemiological studies show that sleep disturbances are very frequent. The clinician often treats these disturbances in a non specific way with hypnotic medication. He by-passes the diagnostic steps by doing this. Recently our knowledge on normal and pathological sleep has much increased. The aim of this article is to show that it is now possible to define a rational diagnostic approach having therapeutic implications.

[Retrospective study of restraining measures in a population of patients admitted under a regimen of involuntary commitment].

The application of the 06-26-1990 law for the protection of mentally ill persons has confronted the psychiatrists working in general psychiatry wards with the problem of keeping up patients hospitalized against their own will and following a judiciary authority decision. Having to deal with this problem, the authors first reviewed the literature about the use of restraint techniques in psychiatry. They observed that these universally used techniques were strikingly denied in the psychiatric literature so that their accurate application was made difficult because of the lack of information about their indications, contra-indications and application modalities. Afterwards, the authors have compared the different restraint techniques in a retrospective study over a one year period among voluntarily hospitalized patients and patients admitted against their wil in application of the 06-26-1990 law. They reported that the application of the law undoubtedly increased the number of restraint but did not modify either the population characteristics of the treatment modalities. These results have to be further confirmed in a prospective study.

[Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and food precautions. A comparison of utilization in Belgian psychiatric education institutes and current findings in the literature].

After an extensive survey of MAOI diets prescribed in different Belgian training institutes, there appears to be a confused situation which can cause obstacle for prescription. Of the diets received, we note that 211 foodstuffs and type of foodstuffs have been recommended for restrictive use. However, a most recent literature overviews shows restrictive recommendations for only 40 foodstuffs and types of foodstuffs. Its systematic analysis allows us to propose to the patient a personalized diet with little restrictions which is explained on an understandable rather than a descriptive basis. The adoption of this kind of diet should facilitate easier access to MAOI's, in case more simple therapy strategies have failed, especially in the atypical depressive disorders and tricyclic's refractory depressive disorders.
