Eliminating invalid self-report survey data.

A sample of 6,370 students in Grades 6 to 8 completed a questionnaire on their attitudes and use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. A subsample showed questionable data based on three criteria: missing responses, invalid responses, and inconsistent responses. Analysis indicated that this subsample was significantly different from the main group on demographic variables and self-reported life-time tobacco use. Results support efforts to identify and eliminate invalid data.

Use of psychiatric services by homeless veterans.

Patients treated in a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) emergency room were evaluated to delineate the differences in use of services between homeless and domiciled veterans who have mental disorders. Data were obtained and compared on DSM-III-R diagnoses, number of hospitalizations, lengths of stay, and outpatient visits in the preceding year. Homeless veterans with mental disorders were significantly more likely to have emergency visits and psychiatric admissions in the preceding 12 months than were the domiciled veterans. However, the average length of stay was shorter for the homeless group. These differences must be accounted for in the design of programs targeting homeless veterans with mental illness.

[Coinfection with hepatitis C and B viruses with pre-C mutant].

We report on a case of co-infection VHB-VHC with a pre-core mutant, a rare association in the literature. The last consensus conference in march 2002 did not help us so much, since only VHC-VIH co-infection was considered. We report on our therapeutic experience about the treatment and discuss the recent studies aimed to define the function of respective virus in the case of co-infection. In the present case, the VHC infection has been completely cured, but some problems with the VHB infection are still unsolved.
