Sweets, chocolate, and atypical depressive traits.

An original questionnaire, the Foods and Moods Inventory (FMI) was used to investigate appetite for sweets and chocolate and its relationship to dysphoric mood. The FMI was administered to a group of subjects with an identified interest in chocolate (chocolate group, N = 73), a comparison sample (comparison group, N = 172), and a sample of former alcoholics (N = 22). Those who reported "self-medicating" with sweets or chocolate were more likely to have personality traits associated with hysteroid dysphoria, an atypical depressive syndrome. In addition, the tendency to eat compulsively, in general, and appetite for sweets and chocolate, in particular, were significantly greater among women.

Graft reactions after unilateral and bilateral keratoplasty for keratoconus.

Penetrating keratoplasty was performed on 134 eyes with keratoconus (102 patients) Including 32 bilateral cases. The incidence of homograft rejection in the first eye of bilateral cases before surgery was performed on the second eve was identical to the incidence in unilateral cases (16%). The incidence of graft rejection was somewhat higher (25%) in the second eye of bilateral surgery, but this difference in rates of rejection was not statistically significant. Surgery on the second eye affected adversely the successful graft on the first even in only one case and this was resolved with medical therapy.

Laboratory tests of renal function.

There are several tests available to evaluate renal function. Because the kidney has such complex and varied functions, no one test can adequately measure them. A rough measure of renal function can be obtained by examining the constituents of the urine. More specific aspects of tubular and glomerular function require more complex tests. Proper interpretation of these tests, however, requires knowledge of the patient's status and clinical course.
