The incidence and causes of ocular trauma among Israeli troops serving in the West Bank and Gaza between 1987 and 1989 was investigated. Of the 985 soldiers who were reported injured, 11.3% (111) were reported to have suffered from injuries to the eye. Although most of the soldiers were supplied with some kind of protective gear, only 27% reported that they received eye protection; none used this protection at the time of injury. Fifty-seven percent of the injuries were caused by stones and 38% by flying glass; 14.6% of soldiers suffered bilateral eye injuries. Only 12.1% of those injured wore corrective lenses. Although only 5% were originally reported to have suffered moderate to severe injuries, 38% complained of residual vision impairment. Better eye protection and enforcement of orders to use such gear would reduce the number and severity of ocular injuries.
A case of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with high myopia is presented in a 17 year old boy with the typical characteristics of the Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome. Although multiple eye anomalies are known to occur in this syndrome, the occurrence of retinal detachment has not been reported up to now. The importance of including a thorough fundus examination in the routine eye examination of these patients is emphasized.
We report the case of a 41 year old lady with high hypermetropia and optic disc drusen (ODD) in both eyes. A recent study has shown that ODD has a greater tendency to form in eyes with a small scleral canal. It would therefore seem probable to find a higher rate of ODD in hypermetropic eyes. Some of the current literature denies this connection. In this article we discuss the pathogenesis of ODD and the possible connection between this entity and "high" hypermetropia.
The authors describe a technique of continuous pelvic traction applied to a select group of 46 patients with low back pain, who had not responded to at least two weeks of treatment by bed rest and analgesic medication before hospitalization. The traction technique included the use of force equivalent to 25% of body weight, directed at an angle of (15) to the plane of the bed. A mechanical analysis of the technique is described and the results of treatment and the efficacy of the technique discussed.
There is considerable evidence which supports a link between abnormalities in copper metabolism and some pigmentary retinopathies. In a previous study, we found such abnormalities in high myopic Caucasian patients. Since the incidence of myopia, and the connection of the latter with retinal detachment, in the black are different from those found in the Caucasian, we modeled the present study on the black after the above-mentioned one carried out on the Caucasian. In the present study no abnormalities in copper metabolism were present, in the black high myopic patient.
Mandibulofacial dysostosis is a syndrome caused by delay in the development of the first visceral arch. This report describes a case which had fusion of the gums and temporomandibular joint, together with coloboma of both lids. This variant has not previously been reported.

Experience with nine patients with fracture of the femoral neck in childhood, eight of whom were treated conservatively by closed reduction and fixation with a plaster cast, and one in whom Steinmann pins and open reposition had to be employed to accomplish fixation, is presented in brief. In six children the results were evaluated as good and in three (including the one case of open reduction) as fair. No serious complications were observed. The problem of nonsurgical versus surgical approach is discussed in the light of the relevant literature. It is suggested that while there can be no set rule as to which treatment should be used, conservative management yields results which are comparable with those attained with a more aggressive approach.
Patients with renal failure treated by chronic hemodialysis tend to spontaneous tendon ruptures. In five out of 35 patients, 8 ruptured tendons have been found--four quadriceps and four finger tendon ruptures. Finger tendon ruptures are usually ignored by the patients because of the low disabling factor in the presence of more vital problems. Secondary hyperparathyroidism was found in all patients who had tendon ruptures and may possibly be the major disposing factor. The patients with tendon ruptures in our series were significantly younger than those without ruptures and had been treated for a longer period of time by hemodialysis, indicating that, whatever the reason for the ruptures, it seems to be a time-related phenomenon.
