Sixty-seven and 109 sonographic endometrial images obtained from 67 infertile patients and 5 healthy volunteers with normal ovulatory cycles, respectively, were investigated with regard to serum estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) levels. The ultrasound devices used were sector electronic scanners (3.5 MHz). 1) Endometrial images were able to be classified into four pattern types, according to the criteria reported by Sakamoto (1985), using a gray-scale contact compound scan. Pattern 1: linear cavity echo, pattern 2: thick hypoechoic endometrium surrounded by thin border echo, pattern 3: thickened border echo, pattern 4: entire echogenic endometrium. 2) Both E2 and P levels were low in pattern 1. The E2 level was significantly higher in pattern 2 than in pattern 1 (p less than 0.01), indicating pattern 2 reflects E2 surges prior to ovulation. The P level was high in pattern 3; and in pattern 4, it was significantly higher than in patterns 1 and 2 (p less than 0.01), indicating that patterns 3 and 4 are in the early and mid-luteal phase, respectively. 3) Sonograms obtained from 12 cases with suspicious luteal phase defects showed an abnormal pattern in the mid-luteal phase. These results indicate that the sonographic endometrial images reflect respective ovarian hormone levels.
Clinical efficacy, bacteriological effect and safety of a new antibiotic flomoxef (FMOX, 6315-S) in respiratory infections were studied. Efficacy of FMOX in 6 patients with infectious diseases including 2 cases with pneumonia, 3 cases with acute exacerbation by respiratory infection, 1 case with obstructive pneumonia were clinically evaluated. Two strains of Haemophilus influenzae, 1 strain of Streptococcus pneumoniae and 1 strain of Staphylococcus aureus which were detected as causative organisms in 2 cases disappeared or decreased after treatment with FMOX. Assessing both clinical and bacteriological findings, effects of FMOX were good in 5 cases and fair in 1 case. No adverse effects were observed in clinical or laboratory findings. Consequently, FMOX is considered to be a very useful antibiotic in the treatment for respiratory infectious diseases.

Sulfokinase, sulfatase, 17 beta-HSD, 20 alpha-HSD, 3 beta-HSD and 5 alpha-reductase activity and steroid concentrations including estradiol, estrone, estrone-sulfate, progesterone, 20 alpha-dihydroprogesterone, DHA and DHA-sulfate in endometrial tissue were examined in order to study the changes in steroid metabolism in relation to the menstrual cycle in the human endometrium. Thirty-one (14) proliferative and 17 secretory) endometrial tissue samples were obtained from women who underwent hysterectomy. Low enzymatic activity of sulfokinase, sulfatase and 17 beta-HSD activity were observed in the proliferative phase (0.25, 8.5, 3.1 nmole/mg protein/h). A pronounced increase in enzymatic activity was observed in the early secretory phase and activity gradually decreased toward the mid and late secretory phase. On the other hand, 20 alpha-HSD and 3 beta-HSD activity did not change during the cycle. 5 alpha-reductase activity was not detectable under the conditions used. The concentration of progesterone in the secretory phase was significantly higher than that in the proliferative phase. The concentration of estradiol in the proliferative phase was significantly higher than that in the secretory phase. There was no significant change in the concentration of estrone, estronesulfate, 20 alpha-dihydroprogesterone, DHA or DHA-sulfate during the cycle. The relationship between the steroid concentration and the enzymatic activity was discussed. The results suggested an active role of the endometrium in controlling the biological effect of steroids.

Cobalamin-binding protein (binder) in gastric juice was studied as a biochemical marker of gastric cancer. Fasting gastric juice of cancer patients and controls with benign disease was used for separation of cobalamin binders by gel filtration and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. Physicochemical properties of the binder in gastric cancer patients were shown to have a larger molecular size and more acidic isoelectric point than the control binder. The binder was found in the gastric juice of all patients with early gastric cancer. Detection of the binder may be clinically valuable as a possible marker in the diagnosis of gastric cancer.
