This prospective study was undertaken to determine whether the 2-mm punch biopsy technique yields specimens of sufficient size and quality to allow a reliable histological diagnosis to be made. A histopathological comparison was made between tissue obtained from a 2-mm punch biopsy and a standard ellipse biopsy taken from a wide range of dermatoses and benign and malignant skin tumours. In 79 of the 84 cases studied, the same histopathological diagnosis was reached with the 2-mm punch biopsy and the standard ellipse. Use of the 2-mm punch biopsy technique produces specimens which allow an accurate histological diagnosis to be made in a wide range of dermatological conditions. Skin biopsy techniques should ideally be quick and easy to perform, yielding specimens of high quality and adequate size while leaving the smallest possible tissue defect and a good cosmetic result. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of the 2-mm punch biopsy with that of the standard ellipse biopsy technique in providing skin specimens which permit an accurate pathological diagnosis to be made.
Lymphoproliferative and myeloproliferative malignancies have been noted in patients with systemic mastocytosis and urticaria pigmentosa. However, to our knowledge an association between mastocytosis and malignant melanoma has not been reported previously.
A malignant angiosarcoma developed at the site of a benign cavernous haemangioma 33 years after the lesion was treated with radiotherapy. The possible mechanisms for this association are discussed.
Eight female members of a family with X-linked chronic granulomatous disease were identified. Five were shown to be carriers of the disease gene. Each of these female carriers of the gene had a history of skin eruptions. The identification of the carrier state is important as genetic counselling should be offered and the prenatal diagnosis of this disorder is possible.
Clear cell acanthomas (Degos' acanthomas) are usually solitary tumours and an excisional diagnostic biopsy therefore provides effective treatment. Such an approach is, however, impractical in the much rarer condition of multiple clear cell acanthomas where up to 30 lesions have been described on one patient. We describe a case of multiple clear cell acanthomas in which cryotherapy provided a quick and convenient method of treatment resulting in minimal scarring especially when compared to excision biopsy.
A 46-year-old man with a 2-year history of localized scleroderma of his right upper arm and elevated Borrelia burgdorferi titres is described. The association of Borrelia burgdorferi infection and localized scleroderma is discussed.
A large family comprised of 18 members is described. Four male members are properdin-deficient, all are healthy bar the index patient who presented with chronic discoid lupus erythematosus. Serum from properdin-deficient males had a reduced ability to lyse rabbit erythrocytes via the alternative pathway or solubilize pre-formed immune complexes. Addition of purified properdin restored these activities. Classical pathway activity was normal. Definite, probable and possible female carriers had normal classical and alternative pathway activities.
Urinary tract involvement by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is uncommon and whilst extranodal disease may be the first manifestation of NHL in 15% of patients, the primary site of origin of NHL in the urinary tract is very rare. At the time of diagnosis, apparently primary urogenital lymphoma is often widely disseminated, with a correspondingly poor prognosis.
