Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition with a significant effect on the quality of life. The prevalence of ED rises with increasing age and other conditions (hypertension, diabetes, ischaemic heart disease, hypercholesterolaemia and depression). The MALES study is one of the largest epidemiological surveys to investigate the prevalence of ED. This study included 27839 patients spanning eight countries. In addition to the MALES study, we review the emerging link between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and ED, including the effect of BPH treatment on sexual function. Preliminary data from the MALES II study shows a significant cascade effect in the treatment seeking behaviour and treatment adherence of patients taking sildenafil for ED. We explore the possible reasons behind the discontinuation of oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors prescribed for the long-term treatment of ED.
We attempted to determine whether persons susceptible to heatstroke produced higher serum concentrations of interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-10 when subjected to heat stress. Nine patients with previous heatstroke and 21 matched controls were subjected to a heat-stress test (at 32 degrees C, 67% humidity, 900 W/m2 solar radiation, and wind speed of 2.5 m/s) for 60 minutes and rested at 24 degrees C for another 60 minutes in full battle gear. During the heat-stress test, blood was drawn at intervals of 0, 30, 60, and 120 minutes, and serum lipopolysaccharide, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-10 concentrations were measured. Patients with previous heatstroke had a higher mean core temperature (0.6 degree C; p < 0.05) and sweated less (0.3 liters; p < 0.05). During the heat-stress test, the lipopolysaccharide levels were not increased and there was no difference in the serum cytokine concentrations between patients with previous heatstroke and controls. However, patients with previous heatstroke had higher absolute serum cytokine concentrations and poorer thermoregulatory response to heat stress in terms of core temperature and sweat loss.
Methyl 2-[propanamide-2'-methoxycarbonyl] benzoate, fucosterol, trans-phytol and p-formylphenol were isolated for the first time from a methanolic extract of Jolyna laminarioides. Methyl 2-[propanamide-2'-methoxycarbonyl]-benzoate exhibited chymotrypsin inhibitory activity and also found to be active against Escherichia coli and Shigella boydii. Fucosterol exhibited antifungal activity against Curvularia lunata, Stachybotrys atra and Microsporum canis.
The rate of release of iron to 1,10-phenanthroline from ferritin fractions of different iron contents has been studied. The experimental results could be interpreted by a simple hypothetical model of the shape of the hydrous ferric oxide micelle at different iron contents, and reasonable correlation obtained between the rate of release and the calculated micelle surface areas. Initial rates of release did not correlate significantly with protein concentration.
The uptake and subsequent release of iron by apoferritin and ferritin was studied by using labelled iron ((59)Fe). The experimental results are consistent with predictions arising from a model system developed in the interpretation of previous experiments. In this model, uptake and release of ferritin iron is controlled by the available surface area of the small crystalline particles of hydrous ferric oxide found within the ferritin molecule. Evidence is also presented for the exchange of Fe(3+) ions among the various cation sites within these crystallites.
