Histochemical demonstration of carbonic anhydrase activity in the odontogenic cells of the rat incisor.

Aldehyde-fixed, EDTA-demineralized frozen sections of the rat maxillary incisor were histochemically stained for carbonic anhydrase activity, by use of Hansson's method. Intense staining was observed in the odontoblasts, all types of epithelial cells of enamel organ in the maturation zone, cementoblasts, and the cells of the lingual dental sac. Less intense but consistent staining was observed in all types of epithelial cells of odontogenic origin directly facing the pulp and pulp cells adjacent to the odontoblast cell layer in the apical part of the pulp, and was considered due to the carbonic anhydrase-catalyzed reaction. Staining of these cells was completely inhibited by heat pretreatment (120 degrees C, 30 min), 10(-6) mol/L acetazolamide in the incubation medium, incubation by continuous immersion under the liquid surface, and omission of the substrate, NaHCO3. The dentin also exhibited heavy staining which was inhibited by the heat pre-treatment. However, this dentinal staining resisted the inhibition by 10(-3) mol/L acetazolamide and was not inhibited by incubation by continuous immersion or incubation without the substrate NaHCO3. The dentinal staining was thus judged to have been due to non-enzymatic cobalt precipitation.

A clinical study of 30 wrist cutters.

Thirty patients who committed wrist cuttings were divided into four groups according to the patients' psychiatric diagnosis: hysteria group, depression group, adolescent behavioral disorder group and other diagnostic group. In the hysteria group, wrist cutting was considered as an expression of the patients' unconscious intention to seek sympathy for themselves from other people. In the depression group, wrist cutting seemed to be a preliminary rehearsal of suicide. In the adolescent behavioral disorder group, internal conflicts in adolescence or discordance with the patients' parents seemed to be the chief motivations of wrist slashing. The core groups were the hysteria and adolescent behavioral disorder groups, and the peripheral groups were the depression group and others.

Giant to small emphysematous bullae induced by Sephadex beads and carrageenan.

The effects of disturbances of the pulmonary circulation on the formation of pulmonary emphysematous bullae in rabbits were studied with the use of changes in the parenchyma of lungs insulted by both pulmonary embolization with Sephadex beads and carrageenan-induced pneumonia. Rabbits given one of the larger doses of Sephadex and then carrageenan in solution had giant bullous lesions in the lobe treated with those agents 2 months later. More animals had bullous lesions in the groups given the larger doses of Sephadex than in groups given the smallest dose or none. In animals killed after 2 weeks, bullous lesions were found, whereas there were none in those killed after 1 week. These results suggest that the size and number of bullous lesions forming in the treated lobes are associated with the dose of Sephadex. Giant and small bullous lesions are varieties of the same disorder, and there seems to be a latent period for development.
