The cost of anaesthetic drugs and equipment.

A review of the literature and an up-to-date estimate shows that despite inflation, the cost of anaesthesia has stayed fairly constant over the last 17 years. A questionnaire completed by a small number of junior anaesthetists showed only a fair, and at times widly inaccurate, knowledge of the cost of anaesthetic drug and equipment. An up-to-date price list of commonly used drugs and equipment is included, along with the cost of some common anaesthetic techniques.

Proliferative and interferon responses by peripheral blood mononuclear cells after bone marrow transplantation in humans.

The capacity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from bone marrow transplant recipients to proliferate and produce interferon in response to mitogens and specific antigens was tested. Proliferation in response to phytohemagglutinin or pokeweed mitogen occurred in cells from more than 90% of the recipients, and interferon was present in 60 to 70% of the supernatants from these cultures, even when tested as soon as 8 weeks after transplantation. Proliferation in response to bacterial antigens was infrequent, and interferon release was not detected. In the early post-transplantation period (less than 13 weeks), cells from only two of four cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody-positive patients proliferated normally in response to CMV antigen and interferon release was detected only once. In the late post-transplantation period (more than 13 weeks), in only two of five instances did cells proliferating in response to CMV antigen release interferon. The response to CMV antigen of mononuclear cells from many transplant recipients differs from that of cells from normal controls.

MMPI criteria for diagnosing schizophrenia.

An attempt was made to find a combination of MMPI scale relationships which were highly discriminating of schizophrenia. Through the use of a standardized structured interview and a diagnostic system for schizophrenia based on the use of discriminant function analysis with nonpathognomonic symptom combinations, a reliable and valid system was used to establish the criterion diagnosis. Approximately 72% of patients reliably diagnosed as schizophrenics were detected on the MMPI via a set of standard criteria (T score on Sc greater than or equal to 80 less than or equal to 100; total raw score on Sc consisted of no more than 35% K items; T score on F greater than or equal to 75 less than or equal to 95; T score on Pt less than or equal to Sc). Only 5.5% of nonschizophrenics obtained all these standard criteria on the MMPI. The assets and liabilities of these MMPI criteria to diagnose schizophrenia are discussed.

Prospective trial of oestrogen and calcium in postmenopausal women.

In a prospective trial in 72 postmenopausal women to compare the effects on bone loss of no treatment, treatment with oestrogen, and treatment with calcium the women were followed up for at least two years and examined densitometrically and morphometrically. Women in the untreated control group continued to lose bone during the two years, whereas the oestrogen-treated group lost none. Loss in the calcium-treated group was intermediate. Oestrogen appeared to inhibit endosteal bone resorption and may have stimulated subperiosteal bone apposition.

Patrons of massage parlors: some facts and figures.

A survey of 183 patrons of a massage parlor in Illinois indicated that the typical customer is a 35-year-old married white male from out of town with 13 years of education who is employed in a lower- or middle-class job and goes to church on Sunday. He reports having had a variety of heterosexual experiences in the past, has come to the parlor because of lack of sexual partner at this particular time or because of curiosity, will come to orgasm during the genital massage, and will find it sexually satisfying. He is likely to have high self-esteem, consider himself personally and sexually adjusted, consider his value system liberal, and to be somewhat sympathetic to the goals of the women's rights movement.

Non-linear bone loss in oophorectomized women.

Sequential bone loss in 37 women with bilateral oophorectomy was monitored by radiographic morphometry. The changes in mean width of the cortices of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metacarpals of both hands were determined using a semiautomated computer-controlled morphometer. It was found that a significantly greater rate of decrease of mean cortical width occurred in those women first observed within three years of the artificial menopause than in the other members of the group.

The measurement of sequential changes in cortical bone geometry.

A method is described whereby the sequential changes occurring in the thickness of the cortices of the metacarpal shafts may be observed. The method utilizes pairs of hand radiographs from which the total bone width and medullary width of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metacarpals are determined in duplicate using needle-tipped Vernier calipers. The errors are discussed and the precision of the method is shown to compare very favourably with the precision of the most recent densitometric techniques. The rate of loss of bone in post-menopausal women is evaluated, and is shown to be dependent upon the number of years elapsed since the menopause.

Optimization of a phagocyte microplate chemiluminescent assay.

Chemiluminescent assays have been used to quantify phagocytic activity since 1972. In recent years these assays have been adapted to the 96-well microplate format as new luminometers have been developed. In this report we describe the optimization of a lucigenin enhanced phagocyte chemiluminescent assay using a Titertek Luminoskan. Factors such as cell concentration, serum concentration in the opsonization of the zymosan used and lucigenin concentration were all optimized in our assay. In addition we have found that some of the unique features of the Luminoskan, continuous microplate agitation during the assay and microplate temperature control up to 43 degrees C, also significantly enhanced the chemiluminescent response.
