[Cryptococcus neoformans meningoencephalitis in AIDS].

The risk for AIDS patients from Cryptococcus neoformans is outlined on the basis of a case report on a 28-year old male patient whose disease was complicated by cryptococcosis. Beside the description of the diagnosis of cryptococcosis (demonstration of the agent and its antigen), epidemiological associations (habitat of Cr. neoformans in fecal matter of birds) and the clinically, mostly not recognized, route of infection via the lungs is stressed. The effective therapy with the combination of amphotericin B and 5-flucytosine, which also in this case has been successful is described from the clinical and microbiological angles. Finally, proposals for the prevention of Cr. neoformans infections in AIDS patients and for a special mycological surveillance directed at this fungus are made.

[Thin-layer chromatography of sugars (author's transl)].

A thin-layer chromatographic method for the detection of sugars is described. The method can also be adapted for the use in biochemistry, pharmacology, and food chemistry. The solvent systems are: I, benzene/1-butanol/acetone/water (20 : 30 : 40 : 10, v/v); II, 1,2-dichloroethane/glacial acetic acid/methanol/water (50 : 25 : 15 : 10, v/v); III, boric acid 0.5%/1-butanol/2-propanol (20 : 30 : 50, v/v). Detection is developed by a diphenylamine aniline phosphoric acid reagent. Additionally an enzymatic method for the detection of some sugars is described.

[Propranolol for prophylaxis of migraine (author's transl)].

The prophylactic effectiveness of propranolol (80 to 120 mg per day) in 18 migraine patients was compared with a placebo group of 19 migraine patients in a double blind study without cross over for a treatment period of six and twelve weeks. A statistically significant difference in effect could not be ascertained. The results and methodological assumptions of the double blind studies with cross over already under consideration in the literature are discussed.

[Radiogenic carotid stenosis. The problem of radiation induced arterio-sclerosis (author's transl)].

Amongst late radiation damage, lesions of the cerebral arteries are relatively rare. The relationship between the radiation and arterio-sclerosis is discussed in connection with a 63-year old female patient with an atheromatous carotid stenosis; at the age of 5 years she received high dose rate radiation for cervical node tuberculosis. From animal experiments and an increasing number of human observations, it is concluded that radiation may be a predisposing and accelerating local factor in the formation of arterio-sclerosis. Amongst the recognised cases of radiogenic carotid stenosis or occlusion, the latent period averages 30 (9-57) years.
