Correlations between spin equilibrium shift, reduction rate, and N-demethylation activity in liver microsomal cytochrome P-450 and a series of benzphetamine analogues as substrates.

Cytochrome P-450 forms a thermal ferric spin equilibrium which is significantly shifted by substrate binding. Within a series of benzphetamine analogues the liver microsomal enzyme system exhibits a close correlation of the substrate induced spin equilibrium shift towards the high spin state and both the rate of P-450 reduction, and of substrate turnover, as well. The spin equilibrium regulates the first electron transfer by favoured high spin state reduction and rapid pre-equilibration with respect to the low spin fraction.

A 3-year follow-up of stroke patients: relationships between activities of daily living and personality characteristics.

The importance of some personality characteristics for improvement of activities of daily life (ADL) was studied in sixty-six stroke patients, initially admitted to geriatric rehabilitation (n=37) or the department of medicine (n=29), 3 years after stroke. Outcome measurements were activities of daily life and motor and mental functions assessed using the Activity Index (AI) by Hamrin and Wohlin (1982). Neuroticism and extroversion were measured with the Eysenck Personality Inventory Scale. Preferred coping strategies were assessed from interviews on how the patients handle difficult events. Major improvements of ADL and motor functions were seen the first year after stroke. There was no major differences between patients admitted, either to geriatric rehabilitation or traditional medical wards regarding the outcome measurements except for better eating ability in the former group 3 years later. Subjects living alone showed deteriorated ADL functions after 3 years. Extrovert personality and active coping strategy predicted improved ADL functions. Multiple regression analyses with AI as the dependent variable proved active coping to predict functional outcome. In conclusion; increased knowledge about personality characteristics can improve possibilities for a more individual rehabilitation program.

Effect of mechanical traumatization on rate and constancy of oxygen uptake of isolated diaphragms.

Diaphragms of mice were traumatized by division parallel or transversally to the muscle fibres. The extent of traumatization was varied by the degree of subdivision. Oxygen uptake was measured by the Warburg technique. Undivided diaphragms as control displayed constant oxygen uptake for the four hours of observation. With divided diaphragms oxygen uptake was unstable. Division parallel to the muscle fibres resulted in continuous decrease of oxygen uptake after a normal initial phase; the decline was significantly steeper was increasing extent of traumatization. Division transversally to the muscle fibres resulted in an initial increase of oxygen uptake followed in a second phase by a continuous decrease. The initial increase as well as the final decrease of oxygen uptake was more pronounced with higher extent of subdivision.

Therapeutic approaches to the management of common baldness.

Common baldness or androgenetic alopecia is a universal problem, having affected both sexes of all races to different extents for as long as mankind has existed. The progressive androgen dependent hair loss follows specific patterns and is a physiological process, which may take on disease quality due to psychosocial compontents. These should be taken into consideration when discussing the several treatment options available, particularly as a cure cannot be offered. Cosmetic measures range from back-combing over perms to hairpieces and wigs. Medical therapies include systemic antiandrogens and topical minoxidil; surgical options comprise follicular transplantation, scalp reduction and rotation. Before starting treatment, however, careful consideration should be given to the differential diagnosis which includes drug-induced hair thinning, anagen effluvium, diffuse alopecia areata, metabolic disturbances, nutritional deficiencies and acute as well as chronic telogen effluvium.
