A rare case of evisceration.

A case of homicide is described where the body of a young woman was found in the countryside in a state of advanced decomposition. The autopsy revealed that almost all the internal organs were missing, but not due to putrefaction. The thoracic cavity was opened in the professional manner normally used during an autopsy. The remains of the small intestine were tied with strands of hair braided into a thin cord.

[Homicide and mutilation of the body--review of the literature].

In two hitherto not elucidated murders of two young women the bodies were devastated in a peculiar way and some organs were removed. The author presents a review of literature focused on manipulation with the human body and also with regard to the ability to commit such operations.

[Gas gun injuries].

Target guns where a cast shot, range 4.5 mm expelled by CO2 from a sparklet can cause from a distance of at least 3 m a soft tissue injury. It can be considered a weapon which may cause serious injuries.

[The cerebellar cortex in sudden infant death].

The author examined the cerebellar cortex in 190 post-mortem examinations, incl. 79 sudden infant deaths and 56 infants under one year with a clearly defined cause of death, six sudden deaths of toddlers and 8 toddlers with other causes of death and 41 death of subjects aged 17 months to 66 years who died from violent deaths. In 50 sudden infant deaths the authors observed a persistence of the external granular layer, as compared with a control group, in 29 infants no difference was detected. The external granular layer persisted in a 16-month-old toddler who died suddenly and in a 22-month old toddler who was drowned. A persisting external granular layer may be a supporting sign of retarded development of the cerebellar cortex in sudden infant deaths.

[Sex differences in sudden infant death].

In a group of 79 infants who died suddenly 65.8% were boys and 34.2% girls and in a control group of 56 infants who died from disease or injuries 53.6% were boys and 46.4% girls. The authors discuss the possibility that sudden infant deaths are one of the biological mechanisms which balance the predominance of births of male infants.

[Causes of death among prisoners in Eastern Bohemia 1980-1990].

The authors analyzed the death of 35 subject where autopsies were made in the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Hradec Králové during 1980-1990 who died in prisons in the eastern Bohemian region. Attention was focused on the causes and circumstances of death. In addition to atherosclerosis and injuries attention is paid to suicide and possible murder. A special problem are deaths after long-term fasts.

[Pitfalls in the serological study of biological traces on motor vehicles].

Using the saturation method, the author examined 18 specimens of impurities from the baitom part of Skoda motor cars and buses and motor oil and lubricant. Using diagnostic sera O, anti-A, anti-B, anti-H in as many as 13 specimens of impurities an obviously non-specifik drop of the titre by 1 to 4 degrees was found. Even specimens of cooked grass saturated the diagnostic sera.

[Developmental changes in the cerebellar cortex and a possible relation to sudden infant death].

The cerebellum cortex was examined in 109 newborns, sucklings and children up to 5 years of age. The persistence of external granular layer was detected in nine suddenly decreased sucklings in comparison with individuals having died for other causes. In some cases the persistence of external granular layer may reflect incomplete postnatal development in relation to the given age and it may provide explanation of morphological and functional immaturity of central nervous system in a sudden suckling's death.

[Diagnostic significance of immunocomplexes].

Immunocomplexes from the blood serum of 129 autopsied males and females from newborn age up to 95 years were examined by means of the PEGIKEM test. In cases of sudden death without inflammatory changes the mean value of immunocomplexes x = 22.794, s = 23.426; in cases of death due to injury without inflammatory changes x = 22.935, s = 21.947. In sudden death with inflammatory changes x = 41.154, s = 50.97; in death due to injury with inflammatory changes x = 54.500, s = 34.757. In inflammatory changes the values of immunocomplexes are increased statisticaly significantly; in sudden death p = 0.0485, in death due to injury p = 0.0193 when compared with controls without inflammatory changes. In sudden death, no statistically significant differences were found between the age groups 0-1 year, 2-15 years and above 16 years. In sudden death and that due to injury, the lowest values of immunocomplexes were found in infants to 1 year of age. Increased values of immunocomplexes may also be found in cases without inflammatory changes and, in contrast to it, may be low in inflammatory changes. Dependence of immunocomplexes upon the duration of the postmortem period was neither proved nor excluded by means of the statistical method. It is suitable to examine immunocomplexes immediately after the withdrawal of blood sample, fluctuation of values may occur in vitro (in cases of drowning and phylonephritis). The examination of immunocomplexes in postmortem blood is possible and in some cases suitably supplements the spectrum of diagnostic methods.

[Medico-legal investigations of 66 homicides].

The experiences gained from the medicolegal investigation of murdered 34 women an 32 men are being dealt with. In the causes of death prevailed the combined injuries, followed by the blunt force injuries, asphyxia, injuries by gunfire and sharp force injuries. In the majority of cases the offenders are men up to the age of 30. The investigation covered the laboratory examination of the clothes of the victims and offenders, biological stains, histology and hairs. 22% of the victims and 60% of the offenders were under the influence of alcohol at the time of homicide. Drugs were found in 19% of the victims and 20% of the offenders. The medicolegal investigation of homicide requires further and improved methods especially in the examination of biological stains.

[Immune complexes in sudden and violent deaths].

Immunocomplexes in the blood serum of 115 autopsied subjects chosen at random were examined by means of the Pegikem test. Average values of 34.9 +/- 44.6 were found in a group of 57 suddenly died subjects while those of 51.3 +/- 76.2 were seen in a group of 58 subjects dead due to injury. The possibility of the determination of immunocomplexes for postmortem diagnosis of immune conditions are discussed.

[Immunoglobulins in sudden and violent death].

In the blood serum of 65 subjects (33 sudden deaths and 32 deaths due to injury) immunoglobulins IgG, IgM, IgA and IgD were examined using the method of simple radial diffusion. The average values in the whole series of infants, children and adults were as follows: IgG 104, IgM 147, IgA 91, IgD 37 international units per 1 ml. In sudden deaths the immunoglobulin levels were found to be higher.
