Binding of thiostrepton to a complex of 23-S rRNA with ribosomal protein L11.

Thiostrepton binds with high affinity and with a 1 : 1 stoichiometry to a complex formed between Escherichia coli 23-S ribosomal RNA and ribosomal protein L11 of E. coli or the homologous protein BM-L11 of Bacillus megaterium. In the presence of T1 ribonuclease, protein BM-L11 and thiostrepton protect from degradation a fragment of E. coli 23-S RNA estimated to be about 50 nucleotides in length.

Amniotic membranes as a biological dressing.

Amniotic membrane dressings were tested in the treatment of 30 patients. Fifteen of them had burns, 5 had chronic varicose ulcers, and 10 had decubitus ulcers or other open infected wounds. No effort was made to separate the chorion from the amnion. Dressings were changed every 48 hours, and treatment was, in some cases, partially ambulatory. Good results were obtained in the treatment of 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns and of other open, infected wounds, both in the preparation of the patients for autografting and in consequent treatment.

The significance of human chorionic gonadotropin in blood serum for the early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy.

Determination of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) values in the serum by the radioimmunoassay technique, was performed in 23 women with suspected ectopic pregnancies. In 16 cases the values of HCG were high and the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was verified by laparoscopy and laparotomy. In 7 cases low HCG values were found and ectopic pregnancy was excluded. The detection of HCG in the serum was found to be an excellent tool for the early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy, thus helping to prevent the dangerous sequelae which follow the late diagnosis of this condition.
