Looking toward retirement. The Janus complex.

What are the characteristics of a general practitioner and do they appear with time or are they inbred? What do GPs think of themselves and the professional life they have chosen? These questions and others should be answered as we follow the lives of different GPs at different stages of their professional lives. Each month we present the male and female perspective of the progressive evolution of the GP.

A hospital antibiotic policy resulting from a simple quality assurance activity.

The use of antibiotics on a medical ward was monitored for 4 weeks. Medication charts were perused to identify all antibiotics prescribed and the notes were searched for microbiological evidence of pathogenic organisms. Presentation of the results at a clinical meeting led to the establishment of a hospital-wide antibiotic policy, where none had previously existed. The survey was repeated 1 year after the policy was instituted.

Quality assurance activity in general practitioner hospital patients: prescription of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Prescription of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was recorded for 6 weeks in general practitioner hospital inpatients as a quality assurance activity. Concomitant use of H2 receptor antagonists and diuretics was also recorded. The survey was repeated 1 year later when it was found that the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs had fallen from 30% of all patients to 24% in the follow-up study.
