Competencies of Florida school health educators.

This study examined and compared the importance of specific competencies for bachelor's level and master's level school health educators in Florida. A survey instrument utilizing a five-point scale was administered to 69 respondents to ascertain the importance of 135 competencies in the areas of administration, evaluation, general health knowledge, and communication. Results of the analysis of data indicate that bachelor's level health educators require competencies necessary for the direct delivery of health instruction, while master's level health educators need to possess specific competencies in administration and evaluation.

A semiquantitative method to assess role image in nursing through the application of semantics.

A semiquantitative method is described for linking professional role image to semantics. The number and type of words generated by three open-ended questions seem to demonstrate professional role image in a staff population of a psychiatric unit. These relationships are quantified as the Role Image Index (RII). The population of a pilot group was divided into three main categories: (1) Nursing Service, Professionals; (2) Nursing Service, Nonprofessionals; and (3) Other Professionals, consisting of psychiatrists and other psychotherapists. Each group was subsequently divided into subgroups. Of these, the Associate Degree Nurse was the only nursing subgroup which demonstrated role image strength consistent with other professionals. Statistical measures employed were regression analyses to assess unusual individual behavior and correlational studies between three proposed indicators of role image strength. While the population is too small to be statistically significant, data are presented to demonstrate the potential significance in the employment of psycholinguistics as a tool for role assessment and development. The tool is seen to have implications for both nursing education and service in the affirmation of nursing as a profession.

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) infection in a hemodialysis unit. II. Factors affecting host immune response to HBsAg.

Serum from 86 hemodialysis patients, 105 healthy hospital staff "at risk" and 160 regular hospital staff was screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibody (anti-HBs). The combined prevalence of HBsAg and anti-HBs was higher in the staff of the artificial kidney unit (57.7%) than in the hemodialysis patients (33.7%). The healthy subjects with HBsAg infection responded significantly more often by producing anti-HBs compared with the hemodialysis patients. Twelve of 29 (41.4%) hemodialysis patients with HBsAg infection produced anti-HBs, while 17 (58.6%) remained positive for HBsAg. This differential response could not be attributed to age, sex, time spent undergoing hemodialysis, delayed cutaneous reactivity or response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or pokeweed mitogen (PWM). However, a much larger proportion of patients with HBsAg than with anti-HBs had previously received blood transfusions (88.2% v. 33.3%). Our results indicate that development of the chronic HBsAg carrier state or production of anti-HBs in uremic patients may be influenced by the route of immunization or the dose of antigen, or both. Although uremic patients maintain normal in vitro response to PHA and PWM, they may have depressed immunity in vivo because of a decreased total number of T-lymphocytes.

Late-life drinking among women.

Although alcoholism exists among older people, the number of cases is unknown, and many alcoholics, particularly women, are unidentified. Late-onset alcoholism is a risk condition for older women. Nurses are in a strategic position to recognize this underidentified condition and to assist affected women in understanding what caused them to rely on alcohol.
