Human respiratory nasal mucosa in progressive systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). An electron microscopic study.

The fine structure of the respiratory nasal mucosa in cases of systemic scleroderma was studied in 5 patients. The cilia were absent in all the sections examined, and the epithelium showed characteristic morphological details. Absence of the mucous elements in the sero-mucinous glands was noticed with evidence of increased activity of the serous units. The capillaries and small arterioles showed severe changes. Electron-dense deposits were seen within the various constituents of the nasal mucosa. It was assumed that the characteristics of the disease are dependent on individual reactivity of a genetically determined immune system stimulated by an undetermined factor.

Changes in the lower respiratory epithelia induced by oestrogen intake. An experimental histopathological study.

Fifty-eight male and non-pregnant female guinea pigs with an average weight of 400 gm were used in this work, ten animals as a control group, the remaineder receiving oestrogen in the form of ethanyl oestradiol in a dose of 10 microgram/animal/day. Histopathological studies were carried out after periods of one, two, three, four and eight weeks, and three, six and twelve months respectively. The respiratory mucosa, at the different levels mentioned, showed definite changes. The surface epithelium showed metaplastic changes with mitotic figures, until complete and definite stratifications were reached. The cilia decreased and then disappeared completely, while the mucus-secreting goblet cells showed an initial augmentation in number and increased activity, followed by a gradual decrease in their number, until total disappearance occurred at the stage of stratification in the surface epithelium.

Urinary catecholamines in habitual smokers and non-smokers.

1. There is no significant difference between habitual-smokers and non-smokers in the incidence of cardiovascular hyperreactivity to smoking. 2. The resting level of urinary catecholamines is somewhat raised in the smoker group particularly in the hyperreactors. 3. Smoking 20 cigarettes caused a higher rise in urinary catecholamines in the hyperreactors of both groups than in the normoreactors. 4. Hypertensive patients exhibited the most exaggerated rise in both the cardiovascular response to smoking and in urinary catecholamines.

Effect of triiodothyronine on blood lipids in obesity.

Different blood lipid components were evaluated in obese and normal Egyptians. In obese, plasma levels of total lipoproteins, beta-lipoprotein, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and non-esterified fatty acids were found to be significantly elevated. The plasma levels of esterified cholesterol and phospholipids were found to be significantly reduced. Tertroxine caused a drop of the plasma level of total lipoproteins, beta lipoproteins and total cholesterol and rise of plasma level of non-esterified fatty acids.

Seasonal variations in plasma corticoid level.

Plasma 11-hydroxycorticoids have been determined in 25 normal young males in winter and in the hot humid summer days in Cairo. A seasonal variation could be detected with higher plasma levels in the summer.
