4-amino-6-(trichloroethenyl)-1,3-benzenedisulfonamide, a new, potent fasciolicide.

The synthesis and fasciolicidal activity of 4-amino-6-(trichloroethenyl)-1,3-benzenedisulfonamide are reported. A single dose of 15 mg/kg was effective in removing over 90% of immature Fasciola hepatica from sheep (6 weeks after infection) and calves (8 weeks after infection). A 2.5 mg/kg dose removed over 90% of mature (16 weeks old) liver fluke from sheep. Single oral doses up to 400 mg/kg were tolerated by sheep without gross toxic symptoms.

Toxicants in plants and plant products.

Toxicants are widely distributed in plants and plant products, including intentionally added, incidentally added, and naturally occurring food toxicants. This review covers the toxicity of some food additives: the distribution, residues, toxicity, and methods of removal of some pesticides and toxic metals; and the presence of naturally occurring toxicants in plants and plant products. Extensive review has been done, particularly on natural toxicants. However, there are still extensive gaps in our knowledge pertaining to effect upon the health of many of the substances known to be present in natural plant food products, as well as even the identity of many natural chemical components of plant foods and their potential toxicological significance. An understanding of their presence, formation, and toxicity is important as far as public health is concerned.

Toxic metabolite produced by Aspergillus wentii.

Mycelial extracts of an Aspergillus wentii strain grown on yeast-extract sucrose medium and initially isolated from country-cured ham were highly toxic when inoculated into chicken embryos or fed to mice. Moldy corn and rice were less toxic when fed to mice. Water extracts of moldy corn or rice or culture filtrates from yeast-extract sucrose medium were not toxic. Purification by thin-layer chromatography followed by crystallization yielded orange-red crystals that showed high toxicity and had a melting point of 285 to 286 C. Chloroform solutions of the crystals had absorption maxima at 270, 295, and 452 nm. The smallest amount of this component necessary to have zero hatchability of fertile eggs was 50 mug/egg.

Production of citrinin by Penicillium viridicatum on country-cured ham.

Seven strains of Penicillium viridicatum isolated from country-cured ham produced citrinin in potato dextrose broth and on country-cured ham. None of the strains produced detectable amounts of citrinin at 10 C. The optimal temperature range for citrinin production was 25 to 30 C.

Toxigenic aspergilli and penicillia isolated from aged, cured meats.

Eighty-nine cultures of Aspergillus and 54 cultures of Penicillium isolated from aged, cured meats were tested for toxicity to chicken embryos. Two of 22 isolates of A. ruber, 5 of 28 A. repens, 2 of 12 A. sydowi, 1 of 12 A. restrictus, 2 of 7 A. amstelodami, 1 of 2 A. chevalieri, and an A. fumigatus isolate exhibited toxicity. Similarly, 2 of 15 isolates of P. expansum, 1 of 3 P. notatum, 1 of 2 P. brevi-compactum, and 1 of 8 Penicillium spp. were found to be the most toxic. Among these fungi, the chloroform extract from the growth of an A. sydowi isolate showed the greatest toxicity. There was no direct or indirect evidence that aged, cured meats contain toxic metabolites.

Influence of s-Triazines on Some Enzymes of Carbohydrates and Nitrogen Metabolism in Leaves of Pea (Pisum sativum L.) and Sweet Corn (Zea mays L.).

Foliar applications of 2 milligrams per liter of 2-chloro-4,6-bis (ethylamino)-s-triazine, 2-methylmercapto-4-ethylamino-6-isobutylamino-s-triazine, and 2-methoxy-4-isopropylamino-6-butylamino-s-triazine caused increases in the activities of starch phosphorylase, pyruvate kinase, cytochrome oxidase, and glutamate dehydrogenase 5, 10, and 15 days after treatment in the leaves of 3-week-old seedlings of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and sweet corn (Zea mays L.). The results indicate that sublethal concentrations of s-triazine compounds affect the physiological and biochemical events in plants which favor more utilization of carbohydrates for nitrate reduction and synthesis of amino acids and proteins.

CT of gastritis cystica polyposa.

Gastritis cystica polyposa (GCP) is an uncommon lesion that usually occurs at the gastroenterostomy site, although occasionally it can be found in an unoperated stomach. We present a rare case of GCP which presented as a large polypoid mass in the gastric fundus and contained cystic components demonstrable on preoperative computed tomography.

Relationship between radioprotective and neuromotor effects of S-2(3-aminopropyl-amino)ethylphosphorothioate (WR-2721) in mice.

The radioprotective and neuromotor effects of WR-2721 were studied in male albino ICR strain mice. The protective activity was evaluated by graded doses of WR-2721 (50-400 mg/kg, IP) against whole body 60Co gamma irradiation at a single maximal lethal threshold dose rad (i.e., 1250 rad). The neuromotor effects of the drug were assayed by its action, at the same dose range as used in the protection assay, on spontaneous motor activity (SMA) and wire hanging performance (WHP). Drug doses were administered 30 min before radiation exposure and neurobehavioral testings. The results showed a dose-dependent increase in radioprotection and an inhibition in the neuromotor tasks. The radioprotective efficacy was seen at doses at which intrinsic neuromotor deficits were detected (100-400 mg/kg). A dose-related parallelism of protective efficacy and neurobehavioral toxicity (i.e., SMA inhibition and WHP disruption) was also observed. The present findings suggest that WR-2721 induces neuromotor dysfunctions along with its radioprotectivity.
