This Japanese nation-wide survey was carried out on long-term survivors among children with leukemia, i.e. those who had survived more than 5 years by October of 1974. Eighty-three children were surveyed. This was about 2.5 times as many as the 31 children surveyed in the first Japanese nation-wide survey in 1971. Clinical and laboratory data were also analyzed statistically and compared to that of the first survey. Most of the children had received inductive therapy according to the old protocol, but 10 children were treated with a combination of VCR and steroids. Nine of these 10 were still in a state of remission. CNS involvement occurred in 15.3% of the cases and a late onset of this complication implied a prognostic significance: among the 9 children whose complication had occurred 3.5 years after onset of the disease, 6 died. The relapse rate decreased between the 4th and 5th year after initiation of maintenance therapy. The percentage of the risk of death became zero after the 9th year.

Two hundred two patients with hemophilia, dependent solely on imported coagulation factor concentrates, were tested for markers of hepatitis B virus infection, antibody to hepatitis delta virus (anti-HD), and antibody to human immunodeficiency virus (anti-HIV). Nine carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were identified. Six (66.7%) of them were positive for anti-HD, a prevalence much higher than that in HBsAg carriers without hemophilia in Japan (1/113 or 0.9%, p less than 0.001). Anti-HIV was found in 96 (47.5%), in sharp contrast to the low prevalence (0/1205) in apparently healthy blood donors (p less than 0.001). These results implicated imported plasma products in the transmission of both delta and human immunodeficiency viruses to hemophiliacs. An efficient method for the sterilization of plasma products is warranted to prevent exposure of hemophiliacs to the accompanying pathogenic viruses.
Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection was diagnosed in 12 children on the basis of recovery of the organism from stool cultures and a 4-fold or greater titer change in agglutinating antibody. Eight of the 12 Yersinia isolates were recovered from stool cultures only after cold enrichment. Clinical findings in 50% or more of patients were fever, rash, diarrhea, desquamation, strawberry tongue, vomiting, red and cracked lips, abdominal pain, arthralgias, hepatomegaly and conjunctivitis. The patients' clinical manifestations and courses of illness resembled those of Izumi fever, an illness that occurs epidemically in Japan. Additionally the finding in two children fulfilled the strict criteria for Kawasaki syndrome, and signs in the other 10 children were consistent with that diagnosis.
