The role of Isospora suis as a pathogen in conventional piglet production in Germany.

In order to evaluate the prevalence of Isospora suis in conventional piglet production in Germany, pooled faecal samples from 327 pig litters from 18 pig production units (20-320 sows each) were examined. At least 10 litters from each farm were investigated. I. suis was present on 83% of the farms and 42.5% of the litters, the infection rate being highest in the third week of age (48.2%). I. suis was found more frequently in samples of diarrhoea than in firm faeces (49.2% compared to 22.2%). Twenty naturally infected piglets from six of these farms underwent examination post mortem, including histology, virology and bacteriology. Histological examination revealed atrophy of the villi in various degrees, mild crypt hyperplasia, fusion of the villi, metaplastic epithelium, erosions and necrosis, especially in the medium and the posterior jejunum and in the ileum. Asexual and sexual developmental stages of the parasite were found in varying numbers in the epithelium of the whole of the small intestine. Bacteria and viruses were mostly excluded as the cause of diarrhoea, and it was concluded that I. suis was the primary pathogen inducing distinct changes and clinical symptoms of diarrhoea.

[The helminth fauna of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes Linnaeus 1758) in north Hesse and east Westphalia. 1. Cestodes].

Between November 1989 and June 1990 a total number of 397 foxes were examined for the presence of cestodes. The animals came from the districts of Arnsberg, Detmold and Kassel. In 16.4% of the foxes infections with Echinococcus multilocularis were found, in 28.5% Taenia crassiceps, in 14.4% Taenia polyacantha, in 4.3% Mesocestoides spp., in 3.3% Multiceps multiceps, in 2.5% Hydatigera taeniaeformis, in 0.8% Taenia hydatigena and in 0.3% Taenia martis. Infections with Echinococcus multilocularis very often showed high worm numbers of more than 1000 per fox. The number of worms for the other cestodes mostly varied between one and ten specimen per animal.

[The helminth fauna of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes LINNE, 1758) in Nordhessen and Ostwestfalen. 2. Nematodes].

Between November 1989 and June 1990 a total number of 397 foxes were examined for the presence of nematodes in the stomach and the small intestine and 403 foxes for the presence of Trichinella spiralis larvae. The animals came from the districts of Kassel, Arnsberg and Detmold. In 32.7% of the foxes infections with Toxocara canis were found, in 11.1% Toxascaris leonina, in 3.8% Ancylostoma caninum, in 3.5% Uncinaria stenocephala and in 2.3% Capillaria species. In most cases the number of nematodes per fox was low. Only Toxascaris leonina was frequently found with more than 20 specimen per animal. Trichinella spiralis larvae were not found in any of the foxes.

Ultrastructure of electrophysiologically identified human sinoatrial nodes.

The ultrastructure of freshly excised human sinus node tissue was studied. In three female patients (ages 20, 30, and 36 years) medically refractory disabling episodes of inappropriate sinus tachycardia were surgically treated by extirpation of the sinus node. Each patient underwent intraoperative electrophysiological mapping to determine the area of earliest atrial activation. This area corresponded anatomically to the region of the sinoatrial node and was excised in each patient, the defect repaired using a pericardial patch. The freshly excised SA nodes underwent ultrastructural study. Three types of myocardial cells were identified: pacemaker or polygonal cells with clear cytoplasm, few mitochondria and sparse numbers of contractile elements (P cells); a transitional cell with slightly increased numbers of myofibrils (T cells); and typical atrial myocardial cells with normal numbers of contractile elements. These cell types have previously been identified in post-mortem studies of presumed SA node. The current study confirms the cell types in electrophysiologically documented SA nodes. The one abnormal finding observed in transitional cells in all patients was an increased number of lipofuscin-laden vacuoles. These vacuoles are considered a sign of cell degeneration and their occurrence was totally unexpected in these young adults. In summary, ultrastructural study of electrophysiologically documented human SA nodes confirmed the cell types identified in post-mortem studies. Furthermore, lipofuscin-laden vacuoles were increased in these three patients and this finding may serve as an ultrastructural marker associated with the syndrome of inappropriate sinus tachycardia.

[The epizootiology and pathogenic significance of infections with Isospora suis in ten piglet production operations in Nordrhein-Westfalen].

From July 1993 to June 1994 2036 fecal samples from 196 litters from 10 pig farms were collected. Three or four piglets from each litter and the respective sows were examined 3 times at 2, 3 and 4 weeks after farrowing. I. suis was detected in all 10 farms. The rate of infection of the litters was 62.2%. 71.6% of all litters with diarrheic problems were I. suis positive. The percentage of I. suis in the feces of piglets was 17.4% at the age of 2 weeks, 41.3% at the age of 3 weeks and 39.1% at the age of 4 weeks. It was also shown that I. suis occurs on any farm with any type of management system and at any time of the year. Fecal samples of sows were always Isospora negative. It is inferred that I. suis is a more important causative agent of porcine neonatal diarrhoea than considered so far. Therefore, further studies on epizootiological and therapeutical aspects and sanitation measures are necessary.
