Dynamics of ovarian follicular development in cattle following hysterectomy and during early pregnancy.

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate ovarian follicular dynamics and functional activity during pregnancy in cattle. In 11 pregnant Charolais cows of Experiment I, size of largest follicle, number of follicles and accumulated follicle size were reduced by day 27 of pregnancy on the ovary bearing the corpus luteum (CL) but not on the non-CL bearing ovary. In experiment II, local attenuation of ovarian follicular development on the CL bearing ovary of seven pregnant heifers was evident compared to the contralateral ovary without the CL. However, in four hysterectomized heifers, follicular development was sustained on both the CL- and non-CL bearing ovaries when CL maintenance was achieved without presence of the uterus or conceptus. In Experiment III, steroidogenic characteristics of the largest and second largest follicles at 17 d postestrus were evaluated for seven pregnant and six cyclic cattle. Follicle by physiological status interactions were detected for both aromatase activity of the follicle and follicular fluid concentrations of estradiol and progesterone. In cyclic cows, the largest follicle had appreciably more aromatase activity than did the second largest follicle; whereas, aromatase activity of the largest follicle from pregnant cows was less than that of cyclic cows. However, in pregnant cows the second largest follicle became the estrogen-active follicle, and this follicle occurred with a higher frequency on the ovary contralateral to the CL-bearing ovary. These changes in aromatase activity were reflected by parallel changes in estrogen concentrations of follicular fluid. The higher progesterone concentration in follicular fluid of the largest follicle in pregnant cows provided further confirmation of their atretic status. In conclusion, during early pregnancy the conceptus and/or uterus ipsilateral to the conceptus appear to secrete compounds which alter local follicular steroidogenic activity and attenuate subsequent follicular growth between 17 to 34 d of pregnancy on the CL-bearing ovary. This local mechanism acting within the ovary may contribute to the antiluteolytic effects of early pregnancy in cattle.

Effect of the increase of steroid binding plasma levels after passive immunization against testosterone on the control of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in ovariectomized underfed dairy heifers.

The ability of passive immunization against testosterone to increase sex steroid binding levels in plasma and thus to overcome the negative feedback of oestradiol-17 beta (E2) on LH secretion in underfed heifers was investigated. Dairy heifers were ovariectomized and divided in 3 groups: high energy diet (H group, n = 4), low energy diet (L group, n = 3) and low energy diet + E2 implants (LE2 group, n = 4). Twenty-four h before injection of bovine immunoglobulins, the mean concentrations of LH were not different between H and L groups. LH baseline was lower (0.8 vs 1.1 ng/ml, P less than 0.03) and the median number of LH pulses was higher (10 vs 5, P less than 0.03) in H than in L group. E2 markedly decreased (P less than 0.01) the mean and basal concentrations of LH (0.27 ng/ml), and number of LH pulses (0) in the LE2 group (P less than 0.05). After injection of anti-testosterone immunoglobulins in the L group, mean and basal LH concentrations tended to decrease. The median number of LH pulses in the L group rose 8 days after immunization (5 vs 7 on day -1 and day +8, P less than or equal to 0.05). Amplitude of pulses tended to decrease after injection (P = 0.08). In the LE2 group, the mean concentration and baseline of LH were not affected by passive immunization against testosterone, while pulses of LH appeared at day +1 and rose (P = 0.07) at day +8 after immunization with 3.5 pulses.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Composition of uterine flushings from Large White and prolific Chinese Meishan gilts.

This study examined differences in selected components of uterine secretions from Large White and prolific Chinese Meishan gilts during the oestrous cycle or early pregnancy. Total recoverable protein, uteroferrin (measured as acid phosphatase activity), acyl aminopeptidase, calcium, sodium, potassium, immunoglobulins A and G, glucose, fructose, oestradiol-17 beta, and prostaglandins F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) and E2 (PGE2) in uterine flushings were measured. During the oestrous cycle, breed effects were detected only for total protein (P = 0.07), which tended to be higher for Large White gilts. However, for pregnant gilts, total recoverable glucose (P less than 0.05), fructose (P less than 0.05) sodium (P less than 0.05), immunoglobulin A (P less than 0.01), PGF (P less than 0.01), PGE (P less than 0.01), and acyl aminopeptidase (P less than 0.05) were greater in uterine flushings from Meishan gilts. Only uteroferrin was higher (P = 0.06) in uterine flushings from Large White gilts. Concentrations of prolactin were higher (P less than 0.05) in plasma from cyclic or pregnant Meishan gilts, but concentrations of total oestrogens and progesterone were not affected by pregnancy status or breed. These results suggest that Meishan conceptuses, individually or collectively, are more stimulatory to endometrial secretion and/or transport of the components of histotroph into the uterine lumen, or that the endometrium of Meishan gilts is more sensitive to conceptus signals responsible for the accumulation of histotroph in the uterine lumen.

Plasma sex steroid-binding protein in mature heifers: effects of reproductive status, nutritional level, and porcine growth hormone, and estradiol-17 beta treatments.

In heifers, the specific 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (5 alpha-DHT) binding to sex steroid-binding protein (SBP) was 53 nM in midluteal phase and was 20% lower (p less than 0.05) in early luteal phase. In ovariectomized heifers on a high (H) or a low (L) energy diet, SBP bound testosterone with high specificity and estradiol-17 beta (E2) with a lower specificity; the affinity constant with 5 alpha-DHT was similar in the two groups independent of diet (Ka = 1.0 and 1.3 x 10(9) x M-1 for H and L heifers, respectively). Electrophoretic mobility of SBP was not affected by undernutrition. The specific 5 alpha-DHT binding to SBP in anestrous heifers compared to heifers in early luteal phase was 17% lower 18 days after cessation of ovarian activity (p less than 0.05) and 35% lower after 78 days of anestrus (p less than 0.001). Specific 5 alpha-DHT binding to SBP was 33% lower (p less than 0.001) in L heifers than in H heifers (40 nM). Porcine growth hormone (pGH) and E2 injections increased specific 5 alpha-DHT binding to SBP in both H and L heifers, but the effect depended on diet. Simultaneous injections of pGH and E2 increased specific binding in H heifers (p less than 0.02), whereas it had no effect in L heifers. We conclude that SBP binding capacity varies with ovarian activity in heifers and that nutritional status is one factor of regulation of SBP binding capacity because it affects binding and modifies the SBP response to stimulating factors such as pGH and E2.

Production of two species of interferon by Large White and Meishan pig conceptuses during the peri-attachment period.

Antiviral activities present in uterine flushings from pregnant Large White, Large White 'hyperprolific', and prolific Meishan gilts, between Days 8 and 20 of gestation were compared. Flushings (20 ml) from all gilts between Days 14 and 20 were positive in an in-vitro interferon (IFN) assay using vesicular stomatitis virus as a challenge infection. Highest antiviral activities (of up to 400,000-1,200,000 total Units/flushing) were obtained at Day 16 of gestation, i.e. clearly after the beginning of attachment. There was no major difference between breeds although, at Day 14, flushings from Meishan gilts yielded significantly higher titres than those from the other two, suggesting a correlation with the previously described earlier trophoblast elongation in Meishan gilts. Conceptus cultures contained antiviral activity, with values very close to those obtained in vivo, but the difference between breeds was not significant. Cultures from Day 20 on contained very little antiviral activity. The antiviral activity was associated with a mixture of at least two IFNs, one of which was IFN-alpha like, and the other was serologically identified as an IFN-gamma, that is an 'immune IFN', previously found to be secreted only by T lymphocytes. This finding may have implications for our understanding of the immunology of early pregnancy.

Cloned ovarian cells from sheep: Cholesterol dependency in progesterone synthesis.

The TV4 cell line is derived from sheep ovarian tissues trypsinized for 60 min and developed from a clone after serial dilutions. The TV4 cells had a doubling time of 24 h in B2 medium with 10% fetal calf serum and 10% BSA. TV4 cells synthesized progesterone (P4) in the presence of cholesterol. As the concentration of cholesterol increased (0, 92.5 and 125 mg/l), synthesis of P4 increased (P<0.01) from 1.05 +/- 0.20 to 30.6 +/- 3.03 ng/ml. Kinetics of P4 production were determined; a linear production response (y = 5.816 + 1.05 x, y = ng/ml, x = hour of incubation; R(2) = 0.97) was observed with up to 35 ng/ml of P4 obtained by 30 h of incubation. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, or FSH and testosterone did not have any effect on estradiol-17beta (E2) or P4 production. Aromatase activity measured by RIA and HPLC following incubation with either nonradiolabeled or labeled testosterone was undetectable. In conclusion, this study established a cell line from the sheep ovary which has a high ability of divide and produce progesterone.

Morphological and functional features of ovine follicles in perifusion with pulsatile hormone delivery.

Large follicles were obtained from sheep ovaries during the follicular phase, dissected and incubated for 24 h in a perifusion system. Continuous flow of B2 medium gassed with O2 and CO2 and supplemented with FSH/LH pulses every other hour enabled us to measure the steroid secretion rates of each follicle. At the end of the perifusion, the follicles were processed for histological examination. It was demonstrated that 70% of the follicles were healthy after 24 h of perifusion. This was associated with a high secretion rate of oestradiol compared to atretic follicles. In contrast testosterone and progesterone secretion rates were similar in healthy and atretic follicles. In both healthy and atretic follicles, repeated gonadotrophin pulses produced increases in steroid production. Such a perifusion system might be a valuable tool to study between and within-follicle interactions to get new insights in paracrine and autocrine regulations in the ovary.

Sexual maturation and morphological development of the reproductive tract in large white and prolific Chinese Meishan pigs.

Body weight of Large White gilts was greater at birth, weaning, 5 months of age and at slaughter; however, Meishan gilts reached puberty at an earlier age (91 +/- 2 vs 192 +/- 3 days, P less than 0.01), had longer periods of oestrus (60 +/- 2 vs 49 +/- 2 h, P less than 0.01) and experienced more oestrous cycles (7 +/- 0.4 vs 4 +/- 0.4, P less than 0.01) before slaughter. The interoestrous interval was longer (P less than 0.01) for Large White gilts (19.8 +/- 0.2 vs 19.1 +/- 0.2 days). At slaughter, uterine length (P less than 0.05), uterine weight, width of uterine horns, endometrial surface area, endometrial weight and percentage of uterine weight represented by endometrium was greater (P less than 0.01) for Large White gilts. However, breed differences were not significant when slaughter weight was included in analyses as a covariate. This indicated that development of the reproductive tract was proportionate to body weight at slaughter for each breed. When body weight at slaughter was included as a covariate, effects of day of the oestrous cycle and pregnancy on uterine width, uterine weight, endometrial surface area and endometrial weight were detected (P less than 0.01) and for uterine length there was a day-by-status interaction (P less than 0.01). Total number of CL (P less than 0.05) and total ovarian weight (P less than 0.05) were also greater for Large White gilts independent of body weight at slaughter. There were more CL in left ovaries for Meishan (8.1 +/- 0.4 vs 6.6 +/- 0.4) and Large White (8.4 +/- 0.4 vs 7.9 +/- 0.5) gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Conceptus development in large white and prolific Chinese Meishan pigs.

Large White (LW) and Meishan (MS) gilts were killed on Days 8, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 30 of gestation. Mean diameters (mm) for MS and LW conceptuses, respectively, were: Day 8, 0.45 and 0.69; Day 10, 2.7 and 1.9; Day 11, 5.3 and 2.7, with the differences among days being affected by breed (P less than 0.01). Variation in diameter among conceptuses from LW gilts was greater (P less than 0.01) than that for MS gilts on Days 8-11, respectively: Day 8, 20 and 46%; Day 10, 29 and 38%; and Day 11, 22 and 44%. Conceptuses had elongated in 3 of 5 MS and 1 of 4 LW gilts on Day 11, 6 and 6 MS and 2 of 4 LW gilts on Day 12 and all gilts of both breeds on Day 14. These results indicate that conceptuses of MS gilts develop more rapidly and more uniformly between Days 8 and 14 of gestation. Overall, embryonic survival for Days 8-12 for gilts not having elongated conceptuses was 90.2% for MS and 73.2% for LW gilts (P less than 0.01). On Day 30 of gestation, embryonic survival was also higher (P less than 0.01) for MS (89%) than LW (55%) gilts. However, embryonic weight, crown-rump length, placental length, allantoic fluid volume, amniotic fluid volume, as well as total glucose, fructose and protein in allantoic fluid were not affected by breed. Placental weight was greater (P less than 0.01) for LW gilts. Uterine development at Day 30 of gestation, based on total length and weight of uterine horns, width of uterine horns, total endometrial surface area and total endometrial weight was greater (P less than 0.01) for LW gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A highly sensitive microtitre plate enzyme immunoassay for oestradiol-17 beta.

A specific and sensitive solid-phase microtitre plate enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for oestradiol-17 beta (E2) is described. After coating with an IgG anti-E2 fraction, we used E2-6-carboxymethyl-oxime-beta-galactosidase in a competitive binding assay and revealed the bound activity with a fluorogenic substrate. Two methods for the competitive binding assay were tested: (1) a classical one (method A) defined as a 'two-step competition' because the E2 sample was first incubated alone, and then E2-beta-galactosidase conjugate was added; (2) and a new one (method B) also performed in two steps but in which the E2 sample was evaporated to dryness. The detection limit of method A was 100 pg/ml (9 pg/well). Method B was more sensitive since 1 pg/ml (0.3 pg/well) was statistically different from 0 pg/ml. Specificity was equivalent with both methods while precision was better in B. Thus, this new method may be able to measure very low levels of oestradiol-17 beta in, for example, the blood of domestic mammals.

Pulsatile LH secretion during the preovulatory surge in the ewe: experimental observations and theoretical considerations.

The secretion of LH during the preovulatory surge has been shown to be pulsatile in several species. We confirmed this phenomenon in intact ewes in two experiments in which we studied the LH surge in detail. In the first experiment, the levels of LH were measured in discrete blood samples taken every 5 min around the onset of oestrus in 5 intact Merino ewes. For 2-5 h immediately prior to the onset of the surge, the median pulse interval was 17.5 min (range 10-55) and the median pulse amplitude was 0.70 ng/ml (range 0.28-1.33 ng/ml). During the ascending phase of the surge, the pulse interval did not change significantly (median 18.3 min) but the median pulse amplitude increased 20 fold to 18.0 ng/ml. During the descending phase, the median pulse interval was 22.5 min and the median amplitude decreased to 8.1 ng/ml (P less than 0.005). During the surge, intervals of 10 min and amplitudes over 30 ng/ml were common. In the second experiment with 2 oestrous Romanov x Préalpes-du-Sud ewes, blood was withdrawn continuously and samples were pooled over 4 min periods for 19-27 h. In the resulting profiles, individual pulses were better defined but the pulse frequencies (median interval 15.2 min during ascending phase) and amplitudes (median 35.0 ng/ml) varied in similar fashion to the Merinos. Using a simple mathematical description of pulsatile secretion, and assuming that LH is only released in pulses, we also found that the high concentrations normally achieved during the surge can only be explained by pulse frequencies and amplitudes well above those normally observed in other physiological situations, including the follicular phase or following ovariectomy. These findings strongly support the experimental data and the combined results of the two studies suggest that the initiation and execution of the LH surge is probably accomplished by changes in the amplitude of pulses. A high frequency is also essential and our data suggest that it may be established some time before the onset of the surge proper, but this requires confirmation. Respectively, the changes in amplitude and frequency reflect the pituitary and hypothalamic components of the positive feedback mechanism. The theoretical study suggested that a change in clearance rate could also contribute to the surge and this awaits further investigation.

Effect of estradiol-17 beta on peripheral plasma concentration of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro PGF2 alpha and luteolysis in cyclic cattle.

Friesian heifers (n = 10) were assigned randomly to receive an intravenous injection of estradiol-17 beta (E2; 3 mg) or saline:ethanol vehicle solution (6 ml; 1:1) on day 13 of the estrous cycle. Blood was collected from the jugular vein by venipuncture into heparinized vacutainer tubes at 30 minute intervals for 2 hours (h) preinjection, 10.5 h postinjection and then at 3 h intervals until estrus. Repeated hormone measurements of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF2 alpha (PGFM) and progesterone (P4) were evaluated by split-plot analysis of variance. Mean concentration of PGFM for the 12.5 h acute sampling phase was 164.1 +/- .14 pg/ml. A treatment by time interaction was detected (P less than .01). After treatment with E2, PGFM concentrations began to increase at approximately 3.5 h, reached a mean peak of 330.4 +/- 44.5 pg/ml (n = 5) at 5.5 +/- .3 h, and returned to basal concentration by 9.0 +/- .6 h. Vehicle treatment did not alter concentrations of PGFM. Injection of E2 on day 13 of the estrous cycle caused luteolysis (P4 concentration less than 1 ng/ml) to occur earlier following injection (96.9 +/- 10.6 h less than 153.6 +/- 17.7 h; P less than 0.05) than did the vehicle control treatment. During the chronic sampling phase of 3 h intervals, 39 of 606 samples (6.4%) were classified as PGFM spikes (323.0 +/- 50.0 pg/ml); 21 (53%) of the spikes occurred at a mean interval of 18.9 +/- 3.86 h before the time of completed luteolysis. Exogenous E2 induced an acute increase in PGFM that may be indicative of uterine PGF2 alpha production. Peaks of PGFM in plasma were temporally associated with luteolysis on a within cow basis.

Variations in patterns of follicle development in prolific breeds of sheep.

Prolific breeds of sheep (Romanov, Finn and Booroola Romanov crosses heterozygous for the Booroola gene (F+) were compared with breeds of lower prolificacy (Ile-de-France, Finn X Scottish Blackface, Merino X Blackface and Booroola X Romanov not carrying a copy of Booroola gene (++] by in-vivo monitoring of follicular kinetics by ink labelling during the late luteal phase and follicular phase of the oestrous cycle followed by histological examination of the ovaries or follicle dissection. At each of 3 successive laparotomies, the 3 largest follicles of each ovary were measured and ink labelled. At the final laparotomy, around the beginning of oestrus, all ewes were ovariectomized. High ovulation rate was not associated with the total number of antral follicles in any of the breeds. However, there were more follicles greater than 2 mm in diameter in Romanov and Booroola X Romanov crosses (F+) compared to their respective controls. Such a feature was not observed in Finnish Landrace compared to Finn X Blackface and Merino X Blackface ewes. A more numerous population of recruitable follicles, together with a similar incidence of selection through atresia, were the features associated with the high ovulation rate of Romanov compared to Ile-de-France ewes. The high ovulatory potential of the Finn ewes resulted from a markedly reduced incidence of selection through atresia. Booroola X Romanov ewes carrying a copy of the Booroola gene (F+) appeared to possess features of both parental breeds, including high numbers of recruitable follicles, smaller follicular size when recruitment occurs and an extended time for recruitment. Booroola X Romanov (++) ewes, not carrying the gene, appeared to have lost part of the 'Romanov characteristics' of a more numerous population of recruitable follicles. The variability in the kinetics of preovulatory enlargement, seen in these breeds of sheep, demonstrates that there are a number of pathways through which high ovulation rate can be achieved and hence through which ovulation rate might be manipulated.

Changes in intratesticular testosterone, cytoplasmic androgen receptors and ABP content of the ram testis after a single endogenous pulse of LH.

The effects of an endogenous LH pulse on the testicular concentration of testosterone, cytoplasmic androgen receptor content and androgen binding protein (ABP) content was studied in rams. Blood was collected from 36 rams for at least 14 h and their testes then removed. Animals were then grouped according to the interval from their last LH pulse and the time of slaughter. The concentration of testosterone in the testis was highest during the first h following the LH pulse and returned to its baseline within 5 h. There was a 60% reduction in the testicular content of cytoplasmic androgen receptors at 3 h after the LH pulse, followed by slow replenishment. The testicular content of ABP was highest at 4 h after the LH pulse. It is in the testis concluded that the pulsatility of LH and testosterone induces a pulsatile translocation of cytoplasmic androgen receptors.

Relationship of testosterone pulses to androgen binding in the pituitary of rams.

The effects of testosterone on cytosol and nuclear androgen receptors of ram pituitary were examined in two experiments. In Exp. I, 500 micrograms testosterone were injected intravenously and groups of 4 rams were slaughtered at 0, 15, 30, 45, 90 and 360 min after injection. Cytosolic receptor concentration decreased from 21 +/- 0.9 to 6 +/- 0.9 fmol/mg protein 30 min after the testosterone injection (P less than 0.001), and then returned towards the preinjection level after 90 min. The pattern of nuclear receptor concentration was the opposite; a maximal increase (12 +/- 3.5 to 32 +/- 5.7 fmol/mg protein) was observed 30 min after injection (P less than 0.001), followed by a progressive but incomplete decrease by 360 min. In Exp. II, blood was collected every 20 min for 17 h in three successive series, each of 12 rams, which were then slaughtered. Plasma LH and testosterone concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. No changes were observed in cytosol receptor concentration, but nuclear receptor concentration was negatively correlated with the interval elapsed since the beginning of the last testosterone pulse (r = -0.62; P less than 0.001). The highest values for nuclear receptor concentrations were observed at an interval equal to or less than 120 min. These results indicate that natural pulses are associated with androgen binding particularly in the pituitary nuclei.

Control of pig reproduction in a breeding programme.

Important improvements in the management of sows have been made over the past 20 years in Europe and the U.S.A. Nevertheless, annual productivity varied between 15 and 25 piglets weaned per sow per year in France for 1983. Reasons for such a difference in productivity have been analysed quantitatively. Marked differences exist between herds in the genotype of pig used and in the age of puberty. Transportation acts as a stress stimulus and stimulates puberty attainment. However, there is variability in the occurrence of oestrus amongst different purchased batches of pigs. Recent endocrine results led to four phases in sexual maturation of gilts being distinguished (perinatal, infancy, activation and resting) and permitted a better understanding of the variation in the onset of puberty. After a lactation of 3 weeks or more, about 25% of primiparous sows did not return to oestrus within 1 week of weaning. Fertility of these sows with a delayed oestrus was 10% lower than in sows having a normal oestrus after weaning. The past 3 decades of research on control of ovulation have yielded positive results. However, there is no satisfactory method for the induction of puberty. One method used to regulate the oestrous cycle in gilts is treatment with a progestagen. This method is still available commercially in France. The close synchronization obtained with a progestagen treatment has led to the use of AI at fixed days (Days 6 and 7) in crossbred gilts but not for purebred gilts. Some environmental factors (e.g. male stimulation, age of gilts at treatment, diet and month of AI) have been analysed to evaluate their effects on farrowing rate and litter size. After weaning, a short treatment with a progestagen (20 mg/day) tends to improve the synchronization of oestrus (3-9 days), especially in primiparous sows. Farrowing rate and litter size are similar in treated sows and control sows. However, this technique does not permit fixed-time AI without detection of oestrus. Diagnosis of pregnancy was successful with ultrasound scanning. This technique can be performed 20 days after insemination if the sow is tied up during the examination and at 22 days if the sow is restrained in a retention box. From 22 days after mating, errors made for positive and negative diagnoses were less than 5%. These techniques contribute to a better control of reproduction in different management systems.

Variations in the plasma levels of gonadotrophin and testosterone and in Leydig and Sertoli cell populations between birth and adulthood in Romanov lambs born in spring or autumn.

Plasma gonadotrophin and testosterone levels during the prepuberal period have been compared in spring and autumn-born Romanov lambs; the somatic and germ cell populations of these lambs have also been compared at birth and at adulthood. At 1 and 3 months of age, the number of LH pulses per hour and mean plasma LH levels were significantly higher in spring than in autumn lambs. In adults, no such differences were observed. Similarly, at 1 and 3 months of age, the number of testosterone pulses per hour was higher in spring than in autumn animals. In the prepuberal period, the ratio of the levels of mean plasma testosterone to LH was higher in autumn than in spring lambs. The highest ratio was observed in adults but there was no variation according the season of birth. At 1 month of age, mean plasma FSH levels were higher in autumn than in spring lambs; this difference did not persist later on. Despite these endocrinological differences, testis weight, total Sertoli and Leydig cell numbers per testis, total number of gonocytes per testis at birth and daily production of round spermatids per testis in adult rams were similar in spring and autumn-born animals.

A comparison of the changes in LH, FSH and testosterone in spring-born ram lambs of two different breeds.

LH, FSH and testosterone variations were compared during the prepubertal period in Romanov and Ile-de-France ram lambs born in the spring. Mean plasma LH levels increased significantly between the 1st and 8th week of age in the Romanov and between the 1st and 12th week of age in the Ile-de-France. At 1 month of age, the number of LH and testosterone pulses per hour was higher in Romanov than in Ile-de-France lambs. The mean plasma testosterone levels, higher in the Romanov, increased from 1 week of age onwards. Mean plasma FSH levels increased from the first neonatal week till the 8th week in the Romanov and till the 12th week in the Ile-de-France. The levels of FSH did not differ significantly between the two breeds. The higher and earlier secretion of LH and production of testosterone in the Romanov might be a cause of its better reproductive performance.
